A few of us from the Cleveland are thinking about going this weekend, 6/11 and were wondering how the conditions were for ya'll? I too was there last October and didn't have the best experiance. Below 30ft. the viz was a big fat ZERO and that is putting it lightly. I'm sure it is better this time of year.? My buddy and I are wet divers and wouldn't be down with a 2.5 hrs drive to find out temps are in the 40's... although, I wouldn't expect it with this sweltering heat we've been having. :)

Thanks!

I was at Portage last weekend but wasn't able to dive - darn allergies! However, one of our instructors who's been diving since the late 60's / early 70's said the vis was the best he had seen in years at Portage. He was laying out a compass course and said it wasn't going to be all that difficult given one could see from one object to the next. The other divers later concurred but did say the vis went to near zip by the silo.

At Portage I don't think the vis has a whole lot to do with what part of the non-ice dive season it is. More on how long the quarry had to settle down after the last set of students doing checkouts. How long the quarry had to settle down since the last major rain storm.

I didn't pay attention to what the divers said about the actual temperature. One wetsuit diver did two dives without complaining. He only did one dive at Gilboa a few weeks ago and one dive at Whitestar two weekends ago due to the cold. One drysuit diver commented that he wished he had brought his wetsuit as he got hot on the dives.

LOL - I just remembered that Portage has a link for current temp / vis on their website.

Doh! I missed it...it would have been nice to meet some of you folks too. Maybe next time?

Incidentally, one time I dove Portage, with my dive club, in the middle of a thunderstorm. Very unique experience... As I recall the water was real cloudy near the surface and cleared up about 15 feet down. Or maybe it was just all that electricity playing with my neurons. :)

cheers
