Looks like the State and Feds are ramping up this project. It will directly impact the reefs north and south of the Port, including Pompano area. They plan on dumping the sludge about 5 miles east of the Port. At the end of the article there are some more links regarding this project.

From the project file:
Decreased Hardbottom and Coral Reef direct impact estimate from
28.92 acres to 26.35 acre

Sure, and what it ends up being a 150 acres, State and Fed apologize, we loose reef, they get their port.

Sucks :(

When I first moved here in 2002, beaches were nicer, there was greenery in Broward. Now they just keep putting more sand on the beach and boogering up the reef and they're building anywhere there's a hint of green. 100 sq ft patch of land? Sweet -- let's build a 6 story condo building. :|

^^ yep.

This isn't a small change...

The PENIP’s main components are to:

  • Deepen and widen the Outer Entrance Channel from the existing 45-foot depth over a 500-foot channel width to a 55-foot depth by a 800-foot width for a flared channel that extends 2,200 feet seaward
  • Deepen the Inner Entrance Channel and Main Turning Basin (MTB) from 42 feet to 48 feet (plus 1-foot required and another 1-foot allowable overdepth for a total 50 feet)

They will be moving A LOT of bottom material.

of which a lot of it, inside the port, is toxic as all get out! Then they will dump it within 5 miles of shore just east of the inlet. I'm sure all that sludge will stay right where they dump it.....

The state park to the south will lose a lot of real estate... Nothing to take from the north.
