It aint a polar bear dive unless you break ice. 50 degree water, oh burr...Wimps

Sorry, but ice would only be in a drink in this part of the country. I can honestly say I do not know how or why anyone would dive in water cold enough to freeze.

It is more than I can stand to dive in Hawaii without a full wetsuit.

Is this a common occurence and what are conditions like in other areas of the country for these dives.

The local newspaper just ran a feature for the upcoming polar bear dips on New Years Day. There are number of them that have sprung up, all fund raisers with each dipper collecting pledges.

Run in and out in your swimsuit. Current water temperature is hanging in there at 47F, almost 10 degrees warmer than usual. The forecasted weather between now and the weekend makes a radical drop very unlikely. The Sunday forecast is for an air temperature high of 39F, also way above normal. Snow showers are also possible, go figure.

Last year they were looking for some suited spotters to offer help if anyone went down in the water.

As for scuba diving, what's the big deal with the right gear? I went for a New Years skin dive in the ocean last Jan.1 in my wetsuit.
