Pocket placement?

I have a 7mm john, and the shorty has a diagonal zipper with the right leg being step through.

I am contemplating adding a glue on pocket to the john. Is it impratical to consider the right leg with the step through shorty?

Likely.

Consider using shorts with pockets, as a X-Shorts.
