If you'd used your scroll function you would have seen I had already posted what I believe to be a reasonable response and not sarcastic or derogoratory.

This other post was meant as a critique/suggestion to someone that is currently in the business of learning.

.. I mean no ill will and I am somewhat disheartened by many people's attitudes towards my questions. It is this 'unique view' you speak of I am trying so frantically to understand...
Like I said, the internet is probably not the place to get this insight. Go to sites and talk to divers that are there, face to face.

Chill little marketing major. As you can see, we jam on all our friends like this.

It's really hard to put into words my feelings about this subject. I understand that all marketing is not necessarily all bad, and I understand that this is a student project. I'm still generally skeptical, well, not just about this, but about everything. I hope that doesn't harm your enthusiasm. It's too bad you cannot dive yourself. I really felt bad about injecting a negative tone into such a positive thread.

OK, here goes anyway.
Diving is important to me because I can go be in a place that seems so strange and inaccessible, yet so close. Shared values? Not that I can tell, any more than any other group. Hierarchy? Sure, we novices respect the more experienced divers. Good luck with your studies.

P.S. I hope we get to see the results of your project!!!!!

HELP! I am a Senior Marketing major working on a project for my Marketing Comm class. My group and I are doing research on the scuba diving community and we are trying to learn as much about ya'll as possible so we can come up with a print ad for a specific product targeting divers!

Right now we are in the research stage which means just information collection and analysis.
What I am trying to find out is basically why diving is so important to you, whether there is a set of shared values among divers and what kind of hierarchy, if any, exists within your community. As a non-diver I would appreciate any input which may help me with my research.

Please share any diving stories (like good trips, friends met along the way, accidents etc) as well as what kind of things establish a bond between you and your diving buddies. Any other bits of information you would like to share will be helpful.

Thanks for your help

You are going to perform statistical analysis with free form replies to non-specific questions? I don't think that will be successful. You should be designing a survey that asks specific questions and allows specific replies. Those results can be run through some of the statistical capabilities of Excel but SPSS (or ?) is preferable.

Well, I began my research by interviewing 3 different divers. One is currently taking a certification course at our college, another has been diving 5 years and the third person has been diving for 32 years and has well over 5000 dives logged. The other two members of my group also interviewed 3 other divers, two from Spain and another who has only 2 dives logged. The specific questions I asked are as follows. Please feel free to answer all or any that you would like. I would like to emphasize how helpful everyone has been. Not only is this project a huge undertaking and a great learning process for me, but everyone who has contributed to this post has helped to direct my focus a little better. So thank you all!
Here are the questions:
