Hierarchy among divers, hmm lets think. It's definitely going to have to be the number of posts a person has on Scubaboard. For instance, H2Andy, Dr Bill, TSandM, and a host more are more important people than me - screw it, whoever can dive the best is the most important and has the most power in the water.
Then again, has anyone actually heard of someone having "power" or being more important in the water? Whoever has air and is with me is the most important person I know of.

You came to the right place. I have no ill will toward you personally, but I'm very skeptical of marketers. You came here to learn about us. You ask us for information about ourselves which you will use to mold a product/service/advertising campaign/brand. You will then attempt to sell this to us to make money. What do we get out of it? A product/service closely tailored to our wants and needs? Or a slick advertising campaign for a product you couldn't otherwise sell? If you have something to sell, why can't you just tell us what it is and let us decide if we want it? How does helping you benefit us?

I hate to be so negative. Diving is a wonderful thing, and divers, having such a unique view of an incredibly beautiful part of the world that most people never see, are mostly really cool people. We love to share our experiences; look how many people, as I do, encourage you to start diving. I just hate to see people being taken advantage of.

To my fellow ScubaBoarders: please don't let this post poison this thread. Be positive. Share. But please be aware.

I'll ponder an answer to some of your questions and possibly get back later, but I do find it interesting that you say, "I have read the boards and in fact posted on other forums," yet you only have two posts on this handle and both are in this thread. Did you mean you have posted on other boards? Or have you posted under a different username? Sorry to be skeptical, but as mentioned before, many of us are wary of marketers digging around here....

why does it matter what the OP's intentions are.

from the few honest responses, it seems this is an interesting opportunity, in this season where dives are few and far between, to reminisce about what diving means to us, and who makes diving so much fun for us.

it is extremely dissapointing to see so many people all but attack the original poster. instead of being so negative, maybe take this as an opportunity to show someone that isn't a diver, what a friendly and welcoming community that divers can be?

I AM a com professor and I really object to the way dhartshorn has approached this project. (I am not her/his professor, this is not an assignment I would give.) This student, I suspect, is drawing language directly from an assignment and asking members of the board to draw conclusions that the researcher should be making his/her self. Indeed, the proper methodological strategy would be, as some have suggested, to draw inferences from the vast corpus of data available through the SB website. I truly believe that asking people to identify their own shared values is antithetical to the research process, that is the researcher's job.

My advice, delete this thread and do the content analysis you were assigned to do. It is a vastly more ethical and ultimately productive process.

Best,

I work in a fairly high stress job and diving is the one place I can totally get away from it all. No Phones, no computers (other than my trusty dive one), no upset clients or negative co-workers just me and the fishes or plant life or silt (I'm landlocked in Canada, a lot of lake diving :( ).

In summary total peace and relaxation whether it be in the Cold PNW or the toasty south nothing is better.

I think that the responses in the thread have been very polite .. this assignment seems to rear it's ugly head on a yearly basis across a multitude of forums (fora?) and all over the usenet. Mountain bike groups, road bike groups, kayaking, camping, hunting, hiking and on and on … Some of the reactions on the usenet get to be quite entertainingly belligerent.

I'd like to thank everyone for their input, good or bad.
No actual product will be produced, it is merely a class assignment for an advertising class.
As for polysemous' post, I did not take any of the language in my thread from my assignment. I just hoped that by posting a thread in a forum I might reach more people than contacting people on an individual basis, this was an idea I had to supplement the 6 interviews I have already conducted. The process has proved to stimulate more negative responses than positive which was disappointing. However, I have received some good answers which will help me with my project and I thank those that contributed, negatively or positively, I have learned a lot about scuba divers. First and foremost, they all have a sense of humour.

sadly, the negative responses is something that has been increasing lately. when a forum grows to the size that this one has, inevitably you will attract people who would rather do harm, than good.

it seems mom's old saying of, "if you don't have anything good to say, say nothing at all" hasn't caught on everywhere.

good luck with the project. let us know how it turns out.

Please don't take my post above as being an attack. I raised a question using your own words about whether or not you are being completely honest with us. Once that question has been answered, I will know better how to respond to your request. You stated that you have read the forums and posted on other forums. If you mean you have posted elsewhere on SB, this is the answer I am not comfortable with, as you only have 3 posts, and all are in this thread. Not a major point in and of itself, but it raises the question as to why you are being dishonest.

If however, I have misunderstood your words, please explain, and my view may change.
