HELP! I am a Senior Marketing major working on a project for my Marketing Comm class. My group and I are doing research on the scuba diving community and we are trying to learn as much about ya'll as possible so we can come up with a print ad for a specific product targeting divers!

Right now we are in the research stage which means just information collection and analysis.
What I am trying to find out is basically why diving is so important to you, whether there is a set of shared values among divers and what kind of hierarchy, if any, exists within your community. As a non-diver I would appreciate any input which may help me with my research.

Please share any diving stories (like good trips, friends met along the way, accidents etc) as well as what kind of things establish a bond between you and your diving buddies. Any other bits of information you would like to share will be helpful.

Thanks for your help

Have you tried reading the boards contents?

Best thing about diving..No one talks underwater...we communicate with specific hand signals that way the BS stories and the Tall Tale dive storiescan be kept for the apres dive beer.

if you do a search you will find everything you want to know. You need to look at the online vs. LDS stuff you will learn a lot. better yet search DIR :D even better go to your LDS and sign up for a class;)

One thing I love about diving is the gadgets! So many cool things to play around with! Better yet, they are made for use in very harsh envireonments! For example, I love my computer because it's waterproof to depths that I'm pretty sure I wouldn't survive in :) I love my regs because of how simply they work, but how well they work. Simple, yet elegant. There is something wonderful about watcing the SPG needle shoot up when you turn on a tank. I recently bought a spool (thing to hold line on) and one of the reasons I bough it over other things were: 1) cheap ($16), 2) small (half a brick?) 3) nearly indestructable (delrin with some glass fibers :) ) 4) high quality, built well and looks sleek. No rough edges.

Most of my hobbies involve gadgets--photography, paintball and airsoft, theatre technical work(sound systems, lights, etc). I don't know if that's a common theme or not, but I think the best way to sum it up is that I love scuba diving because being able to breathe underwater is darn neat! I don't necessarily dive beecause of the nifty things, I would rather dive for a purpose. I enjoy trying to gear up fast and gear down fast, envisioning a possible future as a public safety diver or something.

Why not impress your teacher/boss/ or who ever gave you the assignment and learn how to dive. Jump in....you'll get what you want and more...

Besides, you can't trust any of us to tell you the truth....its a "scuba thing". In fact we are violating one of our covenants by responding to you!;)

Seriously, read all the posts that you feel cover your assignment. You'll get a lot of good info.
