Hi all, This is my first post so please be patient. Its my wife and I special birthday early next year so we would like to go somewhere a little different (but not to expensive) from the Red Sea (we have done Sharm several times and El Quesier). We have narrowed it down to the following three places but can't decide. Please help us, we like lots of fish, colourful corals and easy dives, not too deep or rough. The places we shortlisted are :- Santika resort Manado, El Galleon Resort Puerto Galera and Ellaidhoo resort Maldives. Any opinions suggestions or advice would be welcomed. Regards steve

Hi Steve (& Sally), welcome to ScubaBoard, can't help you out with your choices but you could try doing an advanced search to mine some of the information already availlable here on the board, or post your question here

Hello Steve,

welcome (Scub)aBoard! :happywave

How about Bonaire? :)

If you insist on going to one of the places on your shortlist, :11: I'd recommend searching the geographical forums. Somebody probably already has been there.

Got a 3 sided coin? Nah, use the other advice.

Glad you joined us. Try it out...

Hi, :)

I haven't stayed at any of the 3 resorts that you'd mentioned but have been to all 3 places.

For Manado, bunakan has nice coral reef with relatively no/ slow current. Lembih is an excellent muck diving site. It is about an hour or 2 away from bunakan (by car). You can spot the flamboyant cuttlefish, frog fish, wasp fish, leaf fish, lots of seahorse, bangai cardinalfish, nudibranches, etc etc. In short, lots of funny looking critters.

Maldives was great but I had gone there before the tsunami (not sure what's the impact) and on a liveaboard. Many dive sites have strange currents; I have experienced dives where my buddy and I were swept in different directions in the same dive. Maldives is nice in that it is rather diversified where you can spot the bigger creatures as well as the macros. There were nudibranches, scorpionfish, eels, whale sharks, manta rays, etc.

For Puerta Galera, unfortunately I had gone there on the off-season (April) and did not find it to be as interesting. We saw the usual creatures (jacks, surgeon, squirrel, grouper, eels, etc) in SE Asia. Not much current underwater but surface current was quite fast so recommended to do negative entry.

The pictures that I had taken on those trips are posted in my gallery, if you want to have an idea of what we saw there.

Hope this helps,
Cat.

Thanks for the info. We have decidied to go to Ellaidhoo in the Maldives in February. Does anyone know how good the seaquest dive center is at this resort and what we might expect to see at this time of year. We were told that Ellaidhoo is in a good area of the Maldives for visiting better sights.
