Good Day All,

My girlfriend got open water certified last October. She wants to try some easy wreck diving. I want to go for shore diving because too often the democracy factor on charter boats leans towards deeper wrecks. (They are more fun for those of us who are experienced) I need to keep this easy for her sake. Here are my criteria. Can you suggest a shore dive? Links would also be appreciated. Thank you all.

Requirements
1. Shore dive - no major gear hauling over long distances to waters edge (under 100 yards from parking is preferred)
2. Wreck should be 50 feet or less in depth.
3. No major current
4. State of Michigan - Lower Penninsula (any lake should be fine)

There's an old fishing tug located in West Grand Traverse Bay in front of Elmwood Twp Park. My daughter & I dove it a year ago last May. You are only looking at hauling your gear approx 50' from the parking lot. The depth is in the 40' range if memory serves me correctly.

Thanks parrothead600. It would be about 3 1/2 hours drive for me each way. Do you think this sunken tug is worth devoting an entire weekend of dives? (Maybe 4 dives in two days) Traverse is very nice and there are tons of other activities to do in that area.

Come on up to Tobermory with us Aug 27-31 we're only doing 1 deep wreck. The rest of the trip is geared toward shallower wrecks for extended bottom time and we're starting off with a couple shallow shore dives.

I like G&S Watersports in Tobermory because they will go out with only 2 divers. Going during the week almost guarantees you can pick your dive site. I've found that as long as I'm the first one to call and book for the day I get to pick the sites. The first time we went up they had the Arabia and Wetmore scheduled for the first dive and we asked for a shallower site than the Arabia for the first dive. They didn't have anyone else signed up yet so they rescheduled to do the dives we wanted to do. Don't be afraid to walk in and ask them to change the itinerary.

We would love to have you along, it's a great place to introduce a new diver to wrecks.

If this is the tug I'm thinking of NO it is not worth spending an entire weekend on it. it is barely a shell of half of a boat so one dive is plenty.

There's also Haserot Beach on Old Mission Harbor. 3-4 sunken boats, car and log pile. It's a shore dive in about 25 feet or less.
You can see the images (as well as others here - http://www.gtbup.org/Photos/ )

Between the Elmwood wreck, log pile at Clinch Park Marina and Haserot Beach - you have a day of wonderful shallow diving.

Thanks Greg. Can you tell me if those sunken boats are marked? Are they hard to find if you have never been there before? This sounds like it has some possibilities being easy and all. Thanks for your help.
