Well, Jessica's gone home and I've sobered up and gone to work.

Just in case anyone was thinking that I might have been exaggerating about the people I described, the following message was in my work inbox this morning from a guy who dived support with Jon Bennett and Mark Andrews and has managed to go beyond 100m on air himself (not to 120m, though).

I thought about bringing up the fact that I knew one of the support divers for Mark Andrew's 1999 dive, but figured you probably wouldn't believe me, or at least would find it incredibly convenient for my argument. When I saw this in my inbox, I thought "ah, hell with it"

I'm not going to add his name as I haven't asked his permission yet.

"Larry,

Mark Andrews has just completed this dive. He is the guy I assisted in getting the world deep air record back in 1999. He has called of his attempt on 330m due to getting ‘bent’ 3 years ago.

One notes the error in using "of" rather than "off", you'd never have got that of me :)

Once or twice maybe. But I could conceivably live through a sucking-gunshot-wound to the chest too, if the bleeding could be controlled, my friends reacted promptly to deliver first aid and summon resources, paramedics don't run into traffic, doctor isn't on the golf course, etc.

Nah, I got too much respect for Murphy to take those kinds of chances. Just not worth the risk.

Actually in the far past i've gotten away with it quite a few times, but some friends that i "got away with it " with werent so lucky on other similar dives.

It's just not worth it.

Oh yeah i've also been that deep on air with some folks who are now GUE Instructors , and yes they were on air too! Once at night without lights.....

But we learn and pray that others can learn without the risk.

Best,

Chris

Guess that shows we can all learn.

My GUE instructor told us a personal story of narcosis and failure to function . . . at about 100 feet on air. My reaction was that, if someone as trained and sharp and skilled as he is could screw up a procedure which should have been -- and undoubtedly WAS -- second nature, then I have no business even attempting to do the same thing. I've kept my depths above 100 feet since, and will, until or unless my desire to go deeper to see something important leads me to get the training to use the gases that make the dive safe.

When there was no other choice, that was one thing.

Thanks for the replies. In a nutshell I"m not going to do it because as has been stated- I don't know enough about going deep and the various things involved.

Again, thanks. Was just wanting opinions from experienced divers so came here.

Was that why you put it in the "Basic SCUBA Discussions" forum first? :)

Only kidding.

Good.
Get the training; then you'll be equipped to enjoy the dive :)

Mike,

Hal's a hoot and half isn't he?

Was there this year when he took an instructor to 130 foot so he could become a guide there... the instuctor was so narc'd Hal had to bring him up to 90 ft. or so before he snapped out of it...

He is.

He pretty much trashed an instructor we had who was sitting on the dock while we did the training dives and gave my wife and I a pretty good talking to. Someplace I have an old textbook that he wrote in the 60's or 70's.

Even with the deep air he's done, as I recall, he did some of the very early dives using helium before the civilian sector really knew how.

Good!....If you love deep dive, look for tech diving courses....

By all means do the dive. Darwin's theory needs you
