Hello I am in the bakersfield area an was wondering if there were any areas to go snorkeling. I would like to take my young son so we would probally need a fairly calm area. the only place i can think of is breakwater cove in monterey. but im looking for somewhere a little closer i could do in a day trip. Any help would be of great help, thanks

It might be more than a day trip for you, but you could try the underwater park at the Casino or Lover's cove, on the other side of the Express docks from town.
I dove Casino Point Saturday. There was fog in the morning, but that eventually burned off. Viz was decent at about 40 feet, and water temperature was 60 - I expected it to be colder. There was a lot of life to be seen - including Oscar, the big sheephead in residence.

hey I think i saw oscar the other day when we were there. Actually saw quite a few big sheepshead. We were by the sailboat wreck straight out from the stairs and the life was everywhere. I really like diving there the convenience and the variety are great.

I miss diving off Catalina so much already and you keep ranting about it  .

Casino Point is so neat to dive because of the marine life and the various other attractions: the sunken sailboat and Cousteau's monument, cruising back toward Avalon and diving "the wall", the kelp. :bonk: ;-0

I agree that Catalina would be a great place. Its usually pretty calm and the water temps are around 60 deg F right now. Plus you get to hang out on Catalina afterwards if you'd like. Its a great mini-vacation.

There is also La Jolla Cove in San Diego - though it is hit or miss on visibility - when you do get a nice day there is plenty to see. Plus the area parks, shops, resturants overall is very nice.
