There's something about just being on the water...or under it. I can look at the sea and it makes me hungry. I used to drive a boat 12 miles to work and after a huge breakfast before I'd left San Pedro, I'd arrive at Bacolar Chico and stop in the kitchen and eat.

I noticed on my last trip that I had a voracious appetite throughout the trip. Snacking after each dive and large meals. Fortunately, it went back to normal again quickly.

My question is whether I'm burning a lot of calories while diving. It doesn't feel like that much work (although it was all Bonaire shore diving, so arguably more work than boat diving), but I sure get hungry.

Looking forward to comments,
Dave

Just being in the water burns a lot of calories. I was on a research cruise as a safety diver. Primarily, I just watched the researchers, didn't swim an awful lot. Despite eating like a horse, I lost 5 pounds.

Okay, you get the award! :medal:

I love dive trips. I can almost eat whatever I want and not gain weight....

where can I go next....:rofl3:

Being outdoors, no matter the activity seems to increase my appetite. When I was cave diving the springs in a wetsuit, I could eat like a horse and come home with a weight loss. I also would be cold for days once back to work....so much so my co-workers would make fun of me with my little space heater going when the a/c was running. My core temp would be down slightly for several days after returning home.

THEN, I got a drysuit and all that changed.....I still had the same appetite, etc, but starting coming home with weight gains. I've have to really watch my eating habits now that I dive dry.

that is interesting and good to know... thanks for the tidbit. I'll be diving dry this fall/winter.

Sometimes dehydration masks as hunger. Make sure you're drinking enough fluids before you start to eat. I found that I drink lots of fluids on surface intervals with a small snack, then after diving is done for the day I'm not quite as hungry, but I will eat just a normal meal.
