I have had to get a physicians exam done due to a history of back problems.

I'm going to Egypt in October, will I need an additional physicians exam in Egypt? Or can I take a copy of my recent exam?

Howdy wapyaly:

I've read and re-read your post to figure out just what you are asking and to try to decide why you might be asking us here. I don't think I've quite sorted it out, but I'll try to answer anyway.

If you're asking if you will likely develop medical problems in Egypt that will require the services of a local physician, I'm afraid my crystal ball is cloudy at the moment. You might want to ask your doctor there in England about your current medical condition.

If you're asking if Egypt requires an Egyption physician to examine every incoming tourist (or every incoming tourist with back problems) I think it quite unlikely, but frankly I don't know. You might best ask at the Egyption consulate or your travel agent to get an accurate reply.

If you're asking if the dive operator(s) you will use in Egypt will accecpt a medical release from your physician at home or if they will require you to see one of their doctors before diving, that's not really up to us to decide. You might best ask your dive operator(s) exactly what they will require so you'll be less likely to have any surprises on your trip.

a/ will I have to complete the PADI questionaire in Egypt with the dive centre.
b/ if so will I have to see an Egyptian physician or will they accept a copy of my own Physicians exam?(ie on the PADI medical exam form.)

Is this because you are taking dive training in Egypt? Are you already OW?

Or are you asking because you wish to know whether they will want to know things before you rent equipment to dive?

...my point was- no one on this board has the power to decide the answer to your question. Regardless of what anyone else says, the final decision as to what will be "required" before you dive with any particular dive centre will be up to the dive centre you're diving with. If someone here says one thing and they tell you different, do you think they'll really care if you tell them, "But BillP on Scubaboard says 'XYZ'!"? Even if you tell them, "But PADI only requires XYZ!", then they can come back and tell you that they choose to exceed PADI's standards. Why don't you ask the dive centre what they'll require? "Horses mouth" you know.

Just my 2¢,

Bill

Thanks Bill. I see where you're coming from. Maybe I'm not making myself clear here.

I have had no back problems for 6 months. My doctor signed the PADI questionnaire to say there are no medical reasons for me not to scubadive. I will have to do a PADI questionnaire for diving in Egypt, will I have to see a doctor there or will my own doctors signed PADI form do..........

Your dive centre is ripping you off. They are just trying to protect themselves.

Find another dive center. Then keep your comments relevant, on your medical questionnaire. Do not bleed your aching heart to them about all your historical problems.

Once youre certified, stick to low pressure steel 72 tanks, and boat diving. Do not overload yourself with steel 95s or 104s etc.

Rx.

As BillP has stated, your safest bet is to e-mail the dive op you're intending to use in Egypt and get their direct response. Nobody else can give you a fully confident reply.

Alternatively, if one has had no back issues for over 6 months, no reason to expect a return of the problems & received clearance to dive from a physician, and arrives in Egypt feeling hale & hearty, one could in good faith consider not reporting any recent or current medical involvement of the back.

This is educational only and does not constitute or imply a doctor-patient relationship. It is not medical advice to you or any other individual, and should not be construed as such.

Best regards.

...maybe you can answer some questions for me. How can anyone here on Scubaboard possibly tell you what the dive centre in Egypt will require? Maybe we could tell you what we think that they should require based on our experiences elsewhere or based on PADI's standards, but people don't always do what they should do, do they? What are you going to do if someone here tells you that they won't require a physical by an Egyptian physician yet when you get to Egypt the dive centre tells you differently? Do you really believe that the dive centre is going to change their policies based on what we tell you? And lastly, why are you so resistant to just asking the dive centre for the information you want? After all, theirs is the only answer that really matters, isn't it?

Your dive centre is ripping you off.

How did you arrive at that conclusion DeepTechScuba? Do you think it a "rip off" that some dive ops require medical releases from people with significant medical conditions that might affect their ability to dive? (Note: Wapyaly hasn't said that the dive centre will require a second exam by an Egyptian physician. In fact, best I can tell it looks like wapyaly hasn't even asked them about it yet.)

I wish I'd never asked, I didn't mean to cause a hullabaloo. I just thought I may get some pointers, such as check with the dive centre which I have done tonite........
