Hi guys.. am helping a friend make a booking to dive in Phuket later in December. I remember reading that some dive ops do an overnight trip on Saturday night either to Phi Phi or somewhere else. Any good ones in particular to recommend?

Not aware of overnite (liveaboards?) from Phuket to Phi Phi. Some operators do short 1-2 nite trips from Phuket to Hin Daeng/Muang and Ko Mak. Seebees does this a few times per year. Check their dive trip schedule on the web.

There is a 2 day/1 night to Phi Phi with Calypso every FRIDAY-SATURDAY, departs Friday morning - stay at hotel in Phi Phi. Maybe you mean Colona VI liveaboard, which does 2 days/ 2 nights to Hin Daeng, Hin Muang, Phi Phi departing (normally) on Fridays and return on Sundays. Also Mermaid II, which has 2 day/3 night trips down south, and the new MV Pawara has similar trips starting on Tuesdays.
I can recommend the Calypso Phi Phi overnight, have have two dive students use them recently and both were delighted with it
