The diving in RI was washed out by the high surf this the weekend so my wife and I went to the Pt Judith breakwater to check out the waves. The towering geysers made by the waves crashing over the breakwater were pretty impressive so I figured I'd share some photos.

My personal favorite photo is the one of my wife getting totally drenched by a wave pouring over the top of the breakwater. :D Don't feel bad for her, she wanted to get wet and did it on purpose. She was standing there laughing when it was all over. I put a second photo of her standing in the same spot without the wave covering everything to put it all in context.

Thanks!

That picture is now the desktop on my computer. :D

I was supposed to be down at Ft. W etc. with a number of members of my dive club on our first trip to R.I. but cancelled because of the forecast. Clearly, we didn't miss any diving opportunities. Thanks for the pictures. (Now if we can only make it down another time...)

Hey Chris, Nice pics. I went out to Block on my boat Friday afternoon and came back Sunday afternoon, did some body surfing on Crescent Beach Saturday afternoon, it was a lot of fun. The waves coming onto the beach at Grace's Cove were REALLY impressive, wow. But the more interesting thing on the trip was Friday night after dinner we turned on the flood lights of my friends boat in Cormorant Cove and for about five minutes we were privileged to watching what looked like Common Eagle Rays crashing the bait off the back of the boat. In the twenty odd years of boating out to and diving around BI I have never seen an Eagle Ray, but apparently they are "common" around here. Any comments on their prevalence in the area?

They could have been bullnose rays. They have a very similar shape to an Eagle ray and they are known to occur in southern NE. Cownose rays also occur around here, but they aren't quite as close a match for an eagle ray in appearance.

I've never heard of an eagle ray straying this far north. All the references I have put their northern limit around NC so if it was eagle rays they were a bit far out of their normal range.

I went body boarding at Weekapaug Point Sunday and it was mobbed. The sufers wouldnt allow me anything on the outside and inside they practically aimed at me . I caught 7 nice waves with the seventh one so good, I rode for all its water and it ragdolled me right into the rocks in front of the spectators who were sitting on the rocks higher up. Suffered 3 contusions (knee, elbow, and soft tissue near hip bone). I was very fortunate not to have snapped my head into the rocks. I'm doing OK now after a major R.I.C.E. session.

Spectators were great in seeing I wasn't seriously hurt. I can show pics but it would only gross you out so here are some pics of the surf instead. I didn't realize how much Darwinism was actually in me until this day.

Thanks Chris,

I found a site that has info on local Rays including Bullnose Ray's, Cownose Ray's, and Bluntnose Stingray's, which are also found in this area. It could have been either one, they were gone before we knew it so we didn't have much time to notice details that would have helped us to ID them. Mix that with dinner, a few drinks, night time ...... Pretty cool though. Hope to see one again.

Best regards,
Mark
