T-Mobile and Cingular work over on the mainland, but not over here on the island...no matter what they tell you...unless something has recently changed.
That is interersting, especially if AT&T does work in the island, since Cingular has absorbed AT&T wireless. I would expect Cingular to work on the island if AT&T did.

Cellular Help

The above link (at Cozumelmycozumel.com) is the best at explaining how to get your cellphone to work down there. It's a bit convoluted but makes sense after reading it twice.

I have Verizon and I get on the "North America Plan" for when i'm down there, then switch back when I get home. Works like a charm... just remember to reset your roaming before leaving the U.S.

Mia used to have AT&T and that worked as well... just like Christi said.

Has anyone had any experience with obtaining a Prepaid SIM card for a GSM phone that will work on Coz? They are available from several dealers online, but it looks like the best deal is to get them from the local phone company there.

I was thinking about that this morning when I was playing with my GSM phone. It might be a good way to go, but you will have to have an unlocked phone for a different SIM card to work.

If that is a recent change, then Cingular may work here now...but I had a customer a few months ago with a cingular who was told it would work here, and it didn't. He could never get a signal.

Hmm, wonder if he was using a phone set to band 850 and apparently 1900 is all that is supported in Mexico... He would have to set the phone to 1900 in order to connect. GSMworld and t-mobile coverage maps show coverage "bleeding" over from the mainland.
But as a t-mobile user in a fringe area I can definitely understand spotty or no coverage!
Also the 1900 band doesn't cover as well as the lower bands... I'll report back in a few weeks when I know for sure:)

I had the same experience with Cingular in May of this year. Was told repeatedly that it would work . . .it didn't.

How does one do this?
I believe it is a Network function. Usually the phone will search for the default network set by your service provider. You can force to the phone to search for other networks to join. The menu choices to do this will vary by phone manufacturer.
