Anybody every dove in Borakay? I know it's not an ideal dive site and there may be not much to see, but my family wants to visit there. Rather than hang around the beach might as well dive. I don't know any operators over there and some info would be nice.

Done about 500 dives around Boracay. Worked for Fisheye Divers. Aquarius Divers, Victory Divers, Calypso Divers...all good. Boracay is a fantastic place to stay. The most beautiful beach in the world with awesome sunsets and fruit bats flying by in the evening.
The diving is good. Do the day trip to Maniguin. Nice wall diving and you may get to see the school of scalloped hammerheads.
And, I've been to Tubbataha Reef, Sipadan, Roatan, and no place has a single dive site better than Yapak II. It's a deep wall dive where you drift into it from out in the blue at about 30 meters deep. Strong current with a rising tide around new and full moon and lots of big stuff. Gray Reef sharks, dog tooth tuna, jacks, a school of chevron barracuda...awesome. I dived that site over 100 times and never got tired of it. Boracay rocks. Hank

Thanks! How long was this ago?

Yapak II sounds like a hard drive. Is it?

Yapak II is indeed the best dive in Boracay. I have done it 3 times and every time it was thrilling. It is not a difficult dive as long as you have no euqlization problems ascending quickly...or else you'll miss the group and the dive site. If you go down to 40 m, you'll be diving on top of the dropoff to 60 m. On every dive I have seen sharks and tuna..awesome.

My favorite dive is Crocodile Island, beautiful soft coral garden and many small critters. Easy dive to 20m but sometimes strong current. Excellent Night Dive with Hawksbill Trutle, Spanish Dancers and micro-sized Squids.

Most popular is Friday's Rock, Balinghai where you can see see crates, Frogfish, ribbon eels, groupers, trigger fish, blue spotted stingrays...

There is one wreckdive, Camille, where you sometimes see Ornate Ghostpipefish and Pygmy Seahorses.

Apart from the daytrip that was mentioned in another post, there is a 3h trip to the walls on Panay Is. which is pretty awesome for wall diving.

Overall, Boracay is an excellent dive destination, especially when you are travelling w/ family.

I can recommend Aquarius divers w/ very kowledgable staff, especially their Korean Instructor. She can fing the smallest crtitters.

I usually stay at Crystal Sand, right on White Beach and 30 m from the dive shop.

I would recommend flying from Manila to Caticlan. Small Truboprop airplanes but the airport is adjacent to Boracay and only a 20 min boat ride to the island. Don't wear any shoes or long pants as you will be landing on the beach and wade to shore.

Kalibo is another airport on Panay Island, but you will have to endure a scenic busride to Catilclan and catch the boat there.

Nightlife is sedate, recently more and more classy restaurants and bars have opened. Very laid back.

Credit Cards are not accepted everywhere and, unless you have Mstercard/Cirrus (the only ATM on the island), you will have to go to the Tourist Center for cash (6 or 8% service charge for cash advance, can't remember).

Boracay is not cheap, especially peak season (Basic Room $80, $40 off-season/night). I just went there right after Mindulle Typhoon went through the general area and the rough seas an high winds made them barricade White Beach for the Typhoon Season, not a pretty sight. We had to dive the other side of the island where there are not too many options.

Boracay is not a famous dive destiantion so sometimes you will be alone in the water with your dive group only, especially during off-season. Add 30 C water and viz 20+m you have paradise.

One tip: contact the hotels directly for bookings, they will also offer you packages including flights and will pick you up at the Airport. You can also try the dive shops who will do the same for you.

Have fun in Paradise!

Ahem, I meant descending, of course... :11:

Is it 40m on top the of 20m drop off for a total of 60m? Sounds too deep.

When was the last time that you were there?

The sandy bottom is at 60 m. You will NOT be diving that deep. Max depth is 40m, but even at 30 m you can still see a lot of stuff...

I was just there the first week of July and after the Typhoon, the first 2 days were rough seas but then it cleared and on the last day everything was perfect.

since it is Typhoon seasong right now, you may want to check up on the weather in advance.

Check http://www.typhoon2000.ph for strom tracking and wave heights and the Weather Channel for Roxas, Ph. (next biggest town on Panay Island, about 3 miles from Boracay).

While the beach should still be barricaded right now, diving is possible on the leeward side of the island, although there are not too many options. 90% of all dives are on the windward side and subject to swells, which make boat diving impossible.

Attached is a picture from the "other side", about 10 minutes walk across the width of the island.

Wish I was there right now...

Haven't decided yet. You have some ideas...or want to tag along? :)

I dove in Boracay in 2002 and LOVED it. Yapak II is amazing! There are also some great day trips to be had in the area. Did a night dive at Crocodile that was just fabulous (other than the strong current that came up but all went well!! ). There are so many dive sites around the island you can literally stay there for weeks and not have to dive the same place twice. You will have a great time!! :D
