Then that means you hate lots of people who has posted here, then. I only used the word "hate" once because it makes it hard for this new diver to find dive buddies on my own dive level.

Probably, it's easier for you to have any grudges on anything because you are so experienced. Or probably you like to dive alone and you probably are a rich guy who can earn all the best cards money can buy. Probably you are not man enough to admit that there is a pet peeve you have and not list it and rather bash on the divers who posted here.

Pet peeve and hate are two different things. Pet peeve is an annoyance. Hate is a harsh word.

So you're complaining about the poster who stated he doesn't like complainers?

I don't think that will get you very far..... :D

Mate - my statement 'I hate people who hate' is a frivolous jibe after reading several 'I hate... ' posts . I agree hate is too strong a word.

If you post a 'what's your peeve thread' on this board you're likely to get someone posting, sooner or later, that their pet peeve is people who get peeved. It's called irony. In my case it's also true: I have all the time in world for newbies but very little time for people, both on the board and in real life, who take pleasure in complaining.

I'm certainly not targeting anyone specific in this thread: so my apologies if you're offended.

Now back to the thread and what peeves others....

All right, all right you have a point there and bickering on the internet will be pointless and foolish so I will just carry on my way.

Hmmph, don't you all hate it when you lose your defog bottle and have to use spit? I remember once I ate something hot and not remembering about it and spit in my mask. I have learned a couple of things then. Haha, think what I ate before I spit in my mask and the most logical fix is to tie my defog bottle on a loop and attach the loop to a carribeaner which will be fastened my gear bag and don't buy sea gold bottles just because the tops break off and dries up. Also, when I get done after a day's diving I dry my mask and apply the defog and let it dry and put it away in my gear bag so I never have a problem of forgetting.

I know most if not all of you all have lost your defog bottles at one point or another.

Oh yeah, running out of scuba shampoos just seems to go fast even at only adding 2 cap fulls per application. When that happens I usually just leave my gear submerged in the tub until the next morning when I can run out and get some from my LDS. Does anyone can direct me to a much larger and affordable bottle? 4oz. or 118ml is just not enough for $7.00.

A probable solution to that can we use baby shampoo? After all, it is non irritant even for the eyes so it must be all right for our gear. You all think this can work?

Any other tips you may teach a newbie diver?

Yes I lost it about a week after my OW course and have used spit ever since ;)

For gear cleaning I use a tiny bit of Morning Fresh. One small bottle still has more than half left after five months (used a couple of times a week). Baby shampoo should be fine too but you won't need much. Edit: I also use mouthwash sometimes, especially for my boots + gloves which get a bit stinky.

Yep, 100 % agreed: bickering on the internet is pointless, foolish but also, at times, great fun. Alas this thread is in the 'new divers' forum with special rules that forbid any such entertainment. Hopefully the mods will see the light and move the thread to 'the pub' where it can grow more fully.

As for advice about spit: all I can say, from personal experience, is do not spit into your mask just after eating. :D Alternatively baby shampoo works very well: use a mix of 1/3 baby shampoo and 2/3 water. Allow it to dry on the mask.

Remember - if your mask fogs during the dive all you have to do to fix it is lift your mask skirt, let in a trickle of water and sloosh it around to clear the mask. I did many of my early dives peering through a fogged mask before I learnt that trick.

Cheers,
Rohan.

Yeeesh. That's a lot of peeves when it comes to diving.

Despite taking great pride in being a cynic and grouch, I can honestly say nothing about diving bothers me. Braggarts on the boat, new DIR divers telling me how to rig my gear, DMs fiddling with my gear, DMs NOT fiddling with my gear.. even freshly peed-in wetsuits dont bother me. Why would it? I am going diving!

Some of the things listed here really amaze me. People who bust a nut b/c the DM sets up their gear? Takes 2 minutes to check it and adjust it, if need be. The guy is trying to help... either tell him beforehand or be gracious. Braggarts on the boat? Love it. A few months ago, I listened with great interest as a fellow diver in Lembeh told me about diving in a 12 knot current - "so strong that it ripped the wetsuit off a diver's body." Brilliant stuff.

Lighten up, folks. This is supposed to be fun.

V.

Edit - actually I do have a pet peeve about diving. Divers - especially underwater photographers - that poke, prod and disturb the underwater environment. This gets me very angry very fast. I have heard stories about photographers in underwater contests who actually destroy coral and reef so that others cannot replicate their shots! As a photographer myself, I would like to club such people senseless with the flat side of my housing.

castanagajt:
I hate it when there are new OW divers always wants an experienced diver one with a 100 or so dives to go and dive with them no if and or buts.

I've never encountered this.

castanagajt:
Lots of divers are really cocky but I guess it's like that for every sport, hobby or even job.

It's extremely rare to see cocky divers on a boat.

castanagajt:
Even more likes to stress about what brand a diver "should" have and are quick to judge another diver or a potential diver for the gear they have or planning to have and shove their opinion down the unfortunate person's throat. How do you all approach to these annoying people?

I've never encountered this on a boat.

castanagajt:
The legendary splits verses paddle fin debate....

I've never encountered this on a boat.

castanagajt:
What gear should I have? Why don't most just do research about it. I am sure the same people that asks this type of question would actually sit down and think for many nights at a time wondering what automobile and brand of automobile would be best for their needs.

I've never encountered this on a boat.

castanagajt:
Finding a great Local Dive Shop is always very hard, too. Lots of them wants to sound like car salesmen and reach into our pockets. I love supporting the brick and mortar shops, I do it all the time.

Keep looking, I know of several excellent ones.

castanagajt:
The MAP or MSRP that scuba companies puts up and does not give enough leeway for dive shops to work with in the first place I would say this actually makes a dying sport like this suffer more than it has to.

Dying? I see no evidence of that. I also find many shops are happy to work with you.

castanagajt:
Let's see oh yeah, agencies and what training the individual might have taken and hearing lame excuses why one agency is better than the other.

I've never encountered this on a boat. Folks will answer questions with their opinions when you ask. If you don't want to hear it, don't ask.

castanagajt:
I would love to see a day I may meet another diver that won't try to tell me or push me their opinions and dive merrily and sing "kum-ba-ya."

I don't hear folks singing that particular song, but the rest of what you want is pretty common.

ligersandtions:
My pet peeve (and this isn't even specific to diving...) is when someone who is brand new and has very little experience refuses to listen to someone who has gotten some experience and struggled through the same things before.

Why do you care if they choose the hard way for themselves?

DivingPrincessE:
I hate when people say that they are going to stab any OOA diver who panics and goes for their primary reg instead of the Octo. Another pet peeve are CPR certified people who say they won't perform CPR on anyone other than their family members.

You dive with a tough crowd.

SparticleBrane:
I'm not a big fan of people who think they know everything after 50 dives.

Why do you care? They'll soon learn differently.

OldNSalty:
Dive Masters who think they have to do something for you.

I'm not a fan of them either, but they are usually nice folks and adjust when you're polite, but firm. I remember one female DM who always wanted to help me with something. She finally quit when I gave in and agreed she could help me - with my beaver tail.

surfsidedav:
I guess what kills me more than anything is the "if you don't do it this way or that way, you'll surely die" attitude some people have.

I've never encountered this on a boat.

jjwdiver:
Divers who wear their mask on their foreheads

Why do you care? Did you loan them the mask?

down4fun:
experienced divers who forget they were once new divers too, and treat them with intolerance and judgement.

I've rarely encountered this on a boat.

diveChiq:
i love diving with more experienced people and checking out their gear but if they set it up some way that i dont like, then i dont like it

Why? Are they trying to force you to adopt their method?

ZenDiver.3D:
I always get my old students and friends wanting to buddy with me. I mean, face it, I am a hell of a good time. Seriously. Much fun.

I wanna dive with you.

ZenDiver.3D:
Except for liver and mangos. Hate them.

I can understand liver, but mangos are one of the best foods ever.

BTW folks, don't water down your baby shampoo. Use it straight on a dry mask. Let it dry on the mask and rinse it off just befor or just after you get in the water. Avoid the mask bucket.

A few months ago, I listened with great interest as a fellow diver in Lembeh told me about diving in a 12 knot current - "so strong that it ripped the wetsuit off a diver's body." Brilliant stuff.

That is the funniest thing I have read all day. Cheers!

My pet peeve: Having to work instead of diving.

Not having the time to dive with all of the people I want to dive with.

Not having enough money/vacation time to dive all of the places I want to dive.

Anyone wanna go diving?

I'm with you Tom. Sometimes my work interferes with my diving.
Mangos? One of the greatest fruits there is. Mango Lime pie--yummy!

I'd heard of Big Girl Panties, as in "Put your big girl panties on and just deal with it.", but never Big Girl Blouses.

I like it. I'm totally using it.

I love the colloquialism/slangism from our SCUBA cousins in both hemispheres!

Note to Princessaprilia: Care for a glass of Kool-Aid? (Just kidding!:D)
