I'm really not sure I know what this says, but it sounds as though you disapprove of new divers diving with experienced folks? That's sad. I really love to dive with new divers, because I can pass along some of the wonderful tips and advice that seasoned people gave ME when I was new. I think you can shortcut a lot of dives full of mistakes that way, and become more comfortable and more competent more quickly.

There are lots of us who like to dive with new folks. I don't push my equipment configuration on anybody, but I show them what I use and tell them why I like it. I DO insist on a dive plan, gear check, and gas plan before we get in the water, but that's just good diving. (I insist on it with my experienced buddies, too!)

If you've had experiences that have put you off diving with experienced folks, that's really unfortunate. There's a lot to learn about diving, and you can't fill holes in your knowledge that you don't know you have.

not only do i give you thanks - but i completely agree.
when i was 0-50, i dived with instructors and divemasters who were my friends and friends of friends. i learnt so much from them and they recommended to me that i also dive with people of the same or lesser experience to remove the safety factor of knowing i was with someone more experienced.

through that, i am constantly refining my gear setup, practicing buoyancy, working on my trim.

i love diving. full stop.

i love diving with more experienced people and checking out their gear but if they set it up some way that i dont like, then i dont like it.
when a newer diver asks me a question, i give them my opinion - not a recommendation - as this is the treatment i have had.
at the end of the day, i'd like people to think of me as someone to help/train, the same as my friends. divemasters and instructors have been for me.

if you get peeved all the time, are you taking the comments on board? why the resistance? ask yourself at the end of the day .... does it really matter?

So here it goes maybe some of you can relate to what I have to say and perhaps add into it.

I hate it when there are new OW divers always wants an experienced diver one with a 100 or so dives to go and dive with them no if and or buts.

In reality every diver starts with "0" under their belts. That makes things hard for me to go diving. To be honest with all of you I would not mind diving with a fresh student like myself so we both can learn, together instead of mostly playing "catch up" with an experienced diver.

Lots of divers are really cocky but I guess it's like that for every sport, hobby or even job.

Even more likes to stress about what brand a diver "should" have and are quick to judge another diver or a potential diver for the gear they have or planning to have and shove their opinion down the unfortunate person's throat. How do you all approach to these annoying people?

The legendary splits verses paddle fin debate....

What gear should I have? Why don't most just do research about it. I am sure the same people that asks this type of question would actually sit down and think for many nights at a time wondering what automobile and brand of automobile would be best for their needs.

Finding a great Local Dive Shop is always very hard, too. Lots of them wants to sound like car salesmen and reach into our pockets. I love supporting the brick and mortar shops, I do it all the time.

The MAP or MSRP that scuba companies puts up and does not give enough leeway for dive shops to work with in the first place I would say this actually makes a dying sport like this suffer more than it has to.

Let's see oh yeah, agencies and what training the individual might have taken and hearing lame excuses why one agency is better than the other.

I would love to see a day I may meet another diver that won't try to tell me or push me their opinions and dive merrily and sing "kum-ba-ya."

What have all of you encountered? Does any of you agree? Thanks.
I don't know what to say about this, other than it's sad you've had run-in's with negative people and taken these experiences to heart. I really don't have any pet-peeves about diving.

I posted this down in the Cozumel forum but maybe it should posted here. . .

Our Dives 11/29/08 (here's the actual thread-->Hired a Videographer)

What's in that video is the reason I learned to dive. And every time I do I forget about all of the other unfortunate encounters that may have happened along the way. And I don't hate to say it, but enjoying those dives is do in large part to the experienced divers that took the time to help guide me in the learning process. . . From my OW instructor, to DM's, to fellow divers I met, and yes-to this board, it's all helped me learn. Now I'm able to to spend more time focused on the dive and not the mechanics of diving.

I hate people who hate.

People whose very identity can only be defined by the peeves, grudges and misconceptions that they maintain.

People who like to complain about the inevitable, the trivial and the fixable. People who just like to complain.

Whiners, Whingers and Big Girls Blouses make the world a more miserable place for the rest of us. As my open water teacher used to shout - 'HTFU'.

ItÃÔ a colloquial Australian term...

As much as I hate to take away credit from the crazy slang that does originate in Australia I have to point out it is actually British in origin :) Never heard it in Australia before, but I am sure you are right that it is colloquial here.

As an instructor, I always get my old students and friends wanting to buddy with me. I mean, face it, I am a hell of a good time. Seriously. Much fun. :)
I like diving with them, because I get to see how they are growing as divers. I usually let them lead and I follow. If they get messed up, I get us back, and they learn better navigation. I always go slowly and we find more stuff. That is also why they want me with them.

If we have someone new on the boat, I take them to keep an eye on them and make sure they have a good dive. The only time I get to dive with my peers, so to speak, is when we take a DM -instructor only boat out as a treat for our staff. Then we have an absolute blast.
Or if I am solo diving. That is great. But I don't mind diving with almost anybody.
Every new diver has to dive to get experience. So let them. They can get good points even from the blowhards who have 50 dives and think they are God already, if only by learning the not-to-do's.

And what do I hate? Maracas, countries where alcohol is illegal, and guys who are CPR trained yet refuse to render aid, and think they're Rambo. Yep. That about covers it. Except for liver and mangos. Hate them.
