Yes, Shearwaters do. Not all computers do. And some do not display it during a dive.
And is it fairly straightforward to make sure that the transmitter I purchase will have this level of compatibility? I seem to recall reading something about PPS transmitters being someone's (who seemed to know what they were talking about) favorite. I'm pretty close to ordering it for my wife for Christmas, I can get these. Think I should?

There is a perdix with transmitter up for sale on this site. I think they're asking 900 atm. You can get a perdix 2 with transmitter for about 1500 at your lds. If you buy them separately you'll need either a pps or swift transmitter. They look like this.

I do not know what the Garmin transmitters do about reporting battery levels.
ALL the transmitters in the PPS/Shearwater family report battery level. I prefer the PPS version to the Shearwater "Swift" version, if only for the ease of battery change. It is unlikely you would need the fancy feature of the Swift (it listens to make sure it is not transmitting at the same time as another nearby transmitter), so long as you don't turn your gas on at the same time as your wife does. If this is a concern, get one or two Swifts. They are all about the same price, new, but you can find the PPS versions for around $200 used. Me? I'd get one Swift for your wife's rig, and a used PPS for my rig.

I don't believe Shearwater computers display the transmitter battery status on any of the screens. They do, however, report it in the downloaded data, so the Shearwater Cloud log or Subsurface (a popular 3rd party log/planner) can show it.

For myself I'm going to be hard headed and not use AI. If my wife wants to put a transmitter on my first stage sometimes I won't mind, and we stay pretty close but if I get out of her range, I won't worry about it, but I'm apparently not the reason she wants two transmitters. Just the excuse, which is fine, she wants two, I want them to work properly. I'll still do more homework and read up on my choices.

I'm not really into the Garmin wrist sonar thing. Apparently it only works underwater. I can get a new Perdix and new PPS or Shearwater transmitters (and other choices) from several shops in the Philippines who are willing to send them to me via LBC.

Actually, you will get 2 levels of transmitter low battery warnings:

Hmm, do you use a different transmitter?

So it's just a color coded warning then. I assume that you should be able to complete your dive if the warning is yellow.
