:eyebrow: What we need is a wealthy benefactor to buy up some properties around dive sites and put in a parking lot with a sign "DIVERS ONLY"!

Not a "Half Baked Idea" at all...Well, I'd believe there could be a dive conservancy set up. As a whole I'd imagine divers have some pretty good pooled-finances, even if it was just a $5 or $10 dollar donation. Rather than wait for our diving savior we could be our own?

Besides scuba, I'm also an avid mountain biker.

Mountain bikers have united in several different ways, including the formation of a group called NEMBA (New England Mountain Bikers Association). The website is: http://www.nemba.org/. Mountain bikers routinely contend with public image issues and access to trails issues.

NEMBA is involved in advocacy on behalf of mountain bikers. It fosters good public relations, performs volunteer maintenance on trails for all users and becomes involved with land managers to help maintain mountain bike access to trails. NEMBA has even obtained federal grants for a trail ambassador program in Connecticut.

One of NEMBA's bigger recent accomplishments has been to raise money to purchase the land in an area of Massachusetts that otherwise was likely going to be sold for development. Now the land remains open access woods/trails.

Perhaps the idea of scuba divers organizing a more formal non-profit group to act in scuba divers' interest is a good idea. Whether it's dealing with parking/beach access issues, angry lobstermen, frustrated local residents or anything else, it's an idea with potential.

Oh well, enough of my rambling thoughts. Just figured I'd put it out there.

Good idea Michael but the question of HOW springs to mind. NE Divers come from diverse locations to Cape Ann. What would be the best way to approach this? Perhaps contacting all of the NE Dive Centers and clubs for their input and support both financially and with the organizationally. How did your mountain biking group get started? Do you think that there would be enough interest in starting up a non-profit? How do you get the word out? I guess that I can rambel too.

I was there a couple of weeks back. Saw the sign and my buddy's car was ticked. There are new signs posted with "no parking either side".

Hmm, I thought those signs only applied right where you turn onto the road. After that there are "no parking" signs on the left (land) side, but not on the sea side, where everyone was parking.

I think the idea of attempting to organize divers might be helpful in applying some political pressure to certain areas: diving for lobster in NH & Maine or expanding catch limits, etc.

It reminds me of years ago when windsurfers weren't allowed to put in on Falmouth town beaches. A group banded together and bought a waterfront parcel (where the Woods Hole bike path meets Surf Drive), and opend it up to anyone.

I think the cost would be prohibitive these days.
