I dove Pebble Beach yesterday morning, and as I made the left onto Penzance (the road that runs along the beach), there was a big "ROAD CLOSED" sign on the corner. It wasn't blocking the road, as such signs usually do - it was off to the side but clearly visible. I went ahead anyway, and there were plenty of cars parked along the beach, so everyone was ignoring the sign. Does anyone know why that sign is there? Do the police move it to the middle of the road and actually close the road when the beach gets too crowded? Or is the road actually legally closed, and everyone ignores it? There was another sign at the other end of Penzance where you leave the beach BTW.

It's kind of a mystery to me. I've been there a few times over the past few years....seen the sign...and like you ignored the sign since there are always other cars there.

The police have cruised by while we've been diving there and didn't seem to care....guess I should have stopped them and asked what the sign is all about....

I was up there a couple of months ago and the entire road was covered with rocks. Is the road passable now?

Yup road is passable, I believe it was "washed out" this winter and they added the rocks to "shore it up". Was a nice dive on saturday temp 61 surface, 57 at 25ft and visiability must have been just about 20ft. Parking isn't great but it's the best around. Sorta the scuba mecca of the north shore...couldn't believe all the dive flags in the water and folks in wetsuits on the beach.

cheers!!

I remember the "road closed" being there for at least a couple of years, and we always ignore it. The road was completely covered with rocks but has been cleared early this year.

I was there a couple of weeks back. Saw the sign and my buddy's car was ticked. There are new signs posted with "no parking either side".

I called the Rockport PD and they confirmed the Road is still officially closed. Ticketing will as always depend on the mood of the Local Peace Officer.
