Sas,

I became a Sea Shepherd supporter 6-7 years ago. At that time I found it shocking
how few people really knew what was going on with regards to whaling. Now you would
be hard pressed to find anyone who did not know what was happening. You may call them
lame, and you are entitled you opinion, but Sea Shepherd has been hugely successful
in shining a light on the subject. That is indisputable. You don't have to like them
but without them we wouldn't be having this discussion.
You can be a cheerleader for Japan all that you want. I appreciate your tenacity.
In that aspect we are alike - just rooting for different teams.
My donation will go to "Operation Blue Rage" in your honor. Now that tuna season ended
early - the fun begins. Look out poachers - Sea Shepherds coming to get ya!

That's what Greenspeace tried to do, they came charging in like the cavalry with flags a flyin

Video: "Greenpeace Attacker Harpooned by Fishermen"

I heard about this. He cut nets while the tuna fishing was legal. Sea Shepherd
has been allowed to inspect catches and is being supported by the military
of several countries. If they find poachers, and I'm sure they will, they will
be assisted. There is a large military presence there to discourage the poaching.
Those tactics don't seem necessary in this situation.

Countries that have stood up and will not vote to lift the ban on commercial whaling
so far include:
South Africa
Australia
New Zealand
Chile
Germany

I'll add to it as I find more....

Well said.

I was only enlightened as to the shocking situation with shark finning because of Sea Shepherd, and for that I will always support them both morally and financially.

... So that's two people on just one page of this thread who have only had whaling/shark finning brought to their attention because of the actions of Sea Shepherd...

Sounds like they're pretty effective to me.

Whew. After reading through 21 pages of this thread, I was beginning to think no one was aware of the upcoming vote to lift the ban on commercial whaling which will probably happen thanks to Japan, Norway, Iceland and the United States. Yes, lifting the ban is supported by the Obama administration.

Latin America does not. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela as a group "reached a consensus" and "issued a statement" against lifting the ban. Source here.
