Extra parking isn't always a good thing though...

Extra parking will just mean extra people and still driving to the dead end for parking. That access is widely known, more people will just take advantage of it with an increase in parking. Think the beaches are crowded now? Its bad enough with the limited amount of people from the parking we have in addition to the people that find their way by boat.

Accessibility isn't always a good thing. I'm sure I'm the minority in this thinking... I also think Cypress is much better without land access though - LOL.

If they make all the spots diagonal, everyone will be parked like I am in the picture. The force will have been diluted :( . I'll have to hunt for spots like everyone else .

Well I got an unexpected email from the Mayor of Destin yesterday. I have to say that I'm suprised and impressed that they've keep this issue "in mind" and have taken an effort to get back to me.

They might not get to it at all due to the below reasons, but I'm just impressed that he took the time to write back 2 or 3 times over the past months to give me status on it. I wish all the elected officials could learn from this.

Anyway, below is what he had to share about the parking situation and though they liked the idea, it looks like it won't be done due to other budget concerns. Looks like SeaYoda will still have to practice his Jedi-parking-trick for now.

Hi Michael,

I apologize for not writing sooner, but the City of Destin has just now completed its 2007 budgeting process. As part of our tax rate reduction, we were forced to make strenuous cutbacks. In fact, we removed over $700,000 from this year’s capital budget alone and over $3million over the next three years in capital projects that had already been approved by the City Council.

Because it was my recommendation to the City Council that they make these significant cuts in the budget, I made a decision not to attempt to have this item included in this fiscal budget. After all, if I am going to talk the talk, I must be prepared to walk the walk.

Nonetheless, I have met with the City Engineer on several occasions to discuss and work through this project. I have concluded that your suggestion is a great one and when the resources become available, I will push for it be funded. In fact, we may even try to work your recommendation into our plans to build a public parking/plaza at the end of Gulf Shore Drive .

In any event, I apologize that the project will not be immediately implemented, but will commit to you that I will push for it when the “time is right”.

My Very Best,

Craig Barker

WOW! I am impressed !!!!!

Too bad I don't vote in Destin - he would have my vote.

Couldnt someone get a "parking pass" from a nearby condo that we could photocopy? A lot of the "parking passes" that condos use are merely a neon colored paper. Oh crap, I forgot this isnt legal. Or we could just use the excuse, that our cars happened to die at the nearest condo to the jetty, so we had to push our cars into the nearest lot (placing a sign on our cars: looking for a mechanic, be back soon). We just happened to have our scuba gear with us, so we decided to take a dip, and we couldnt find a mechanic 50 ft. down for some reason.

The condo complex "directly next to" the beach access doesn't allow rentals I'm told. (this is from someone I know who owns a condo there.) It's a "walled in" and gated parking lot also. So it'd be hard to park there.

on the other side of the beach access are private owned houses. Can't slip that past them by parking there.

Across the street are boat docks & water. (this is where the public parking area is).

There are some condos a few lots up the street that you might be able to "sneak into", but just not that many options.
