I'm going to be in Playa del Carmen for AOW certification and was told by a friend that I should sign up for DAN dive insurance. Is DAN better than PADI for insurance? Any info/suggestions as to which I should consider would be greatly appreciated as I am relatively new to diving. Thanks in advance!

I do not know if it's the same where you are, but here (Europe) I believe that the Padi divers insurrance is really an insurance by http://www.dive-master.net. I've got insurance directly with them (not through Padi but directly) both for health, equipment etc. (but not pro liability), and they have always been efficient when I've needed them (fortunately not for dive-accidents).

Check who's really carrying your insurance (it's not Padi) and the conditions they have.....or play it safe and take both the Padi and Dan insurances...

Last months issue of Scuba diving by Rodale has a break down of insurance. what they cover and what they don't. This doesn't mean don't do your research but maybe that will help. Their is different packages rangeing from 50 to 95 dollars a year. I hope this will help you out.

The article on the Rodales site has a few mistakes but you can get the links for each program. Based on all factors I decided to go with the PADI Gold.

to all for the info and reminding me about the article in Rodale's. After checking out the sites, I decided to go with PADI.

On another note, is it a good idea to join DAN although I'm not getting dive insurance through them?

DAN is definately not a negative thing to have =)

In Mexico over the last year, DAN has had some troubles, basically a chamber was accused of overcharging DAN for treatments made and DAN put a $3000 cap on the insurance in mexico. This oviously cused some problems for people that thought they would be covered, but recieved a bill after their treatment.

I have switched to the V&B, as have our whole staff.
