I recently had some plumbing to do. I hate plumbing, but I can do it because I have never been able to afford a plumber. I decided to check and see how bad it would be, just in case I would be willing to part with the cash this time. Almost all the plumbers I called said their base rate was at least $250 per hour. Apparently there are a lot of people who think that is a reasonable rate. Me? I got out my tools again and paid myself the best hourly rate I have ever enjoyed.

I am going to guess that the plumbers are not working as a non-profit organization, barely paying for the overhead and then having to work another job on the side so that they can put food on their tables and pay their mortgages. I am going to guess that they can charge $250 per hour because people feel they are entitled to earn a profit for their services, and those people must think that rate is fair. If everyone is able to charge the same rate and stay in business, then it must be the rate the market will bear.

Now I'm confused. Are these the same people who think instructors should volunteer their services and that dive shops should sell gear at cost? Are these the same people who think a $25 regulator servicing is highway robbery?

Dutch is a playground, not just a hole in the ground. Its maintained, clean and there are safety people around if you get in trouble. Its a scuba park, is owned and is insured and has a compressor with nitrox. Its an LDS with its own water.


Mountains are free, but skiing on them is not.

Reminds me of an old joke:

Dr: How much will it cost for the repair?
Plumber: $250 an hour.
Dr: That's outrageous, I'm a surgeon and I can't charge that much money.
Plumber: Well, when I was a surgeon I couldn't charge that much either.


My grandfather told me that one back in the '50's but the price was significantly lower.

***cough cough*** and $150 boat ride, plus $20 tip for 2 dives = unlimited dives @ $35 total...Oh did I mention - hot fresh water shower, full sh!ter, and hot food snack bar?

Sure I get it, the ocean is the ocean - unique in every way. And so is the quarry - unique in every other way. Two sides of the same coin really. I like both.
