...LDS does not have printed course material. I guess since this course is still very new to the states, materials will be coming at a later date. ...

There are no specific package of printed materials for the Self-Reliant course. There is a list of reference materials for the instructor to have available. Self reliant reference materials.JPG

OK, tomorrow evening is the round table discussion up in Glens Falls about the new Self Reliant Diver certification/training being offered by PADI. The Course Director at Rich Morin's, where my kids certified and I did my retraining and my Rescue is holding the open house, round table forum, they say because they are seeking an open discussion with the local diving community on this new offering, partially to expose divers to it, and to see what feedback they receive.

I figured I would go, as I am always interested in further training and experience in this sport, and because I do occasionally do some limited solo. I had already been considering pursuing some training in solo, prior to learning of PADI's evolving views on the practice, and see this as an opportunity to learn more, and ask a few questions.

I am also looking for any suggestions from my friends here, of items of discussion to bring to the table at that tomorrow's forum, since the invitation is asking for feedback and input.

I think the key question would be whether & what local dive site op.s (e.g.: quarry owners) and dive op.s (e.g.: charter boats) will recognize the cert., and whether those who allow solo diving will require such a cert. and whether there will be additional issues to cover (e.g.: extra liability forms).

Good points Rich.

Several responses above indicated that at least some dive ops are accepting the PADI as a Solo, even though the card does not specifically say "solo" on it, but rather: "Self Reliant".

It would certainly be worth seeing who will, or will not accept this cert, that already require a "solo" card before allowing independent divers into the water.
