I don't want to turn this into a PADI bashing thread (hah! fat chance) but I never understood the PADI requirement that for 5 star rating the shop must not teach other courses which are available from PADI.

Does that mean (say) if a dive shop offered TDI Advanced Wreck, then that is OK (as PADI has no equivalent course on wreck penetration) but it would be wrong to teach TDI Advanced Trimix, for which you would lose your 5 star rating?

I can't believe what I am reading here! I was trained at a PADI 5 star dive center so I have been thinking for the past 18 years that I was a 5 star diver. And now it appears I'm not. My life is upside down right now. I am so confused. I am devastated.

I just got back from Little Cayman Island and thought I had a great dive trip. But maybe I didn't. Maybe I was fooled into thinking I had a great time like I was fooled into thinking I was a 5 star diver.

Please. PLEASE!!!!! Somebody out there tell me I am a 5 star diver so I can sleep at night again. Anybody! Help a brother out!!!!!!!!!!

It's pretty simple. If you have the option of teaching a course through PADI or through agency A and you choose to teach through agency A, then agency A gets the money for materials and certification. If you teach it through PADI, then PADI gets the money for materials and certification. PADI removes that option (and makes you pay them for doing so). It's really quite brilliant. I understand why they do it. I don't understand why shops fall for it.

By exceeding the standards I pronounce you a 6* diver. Sleep well my brother, sleep well.

I remember someone saying that when SDI got going, they considered introducing the concept of "6 star" facilities. I suspect the idea would be purely to piss off PADI. In the event, I don't think that they ever did it.

I also got a gold card... and clearly the comment regarding being better than another diver based on the c-card´s colour was sarcastic

just wondering, don´t you become a better diver by logging more dive time? ie. through experience and experience alone? I mean, theory can only get you so far...

Cheers!

Usually, but not always. We all learn at different rates, some rarely learn at all. Some learn on their own, others only learn when taught. Learning more skills in the pool helps. So does self confidence.
