So, I get home today and while opening up scubaboard, I'm checking my mail. In this, I have a offer to join the PADI Diving Society for an annual subscription of $29. As I'm reading this, I'm wondering why would I want to do this? So, since I have SB up, why not post this and see what happens. So, my question is why do I want to do this? Is anybody out there already members? What is the benefit?

In their promotion I get the following:

12 month membership
Annual subscription to Sport Diver Magazine
2 water resistant sport bags
Dive equipment savings
Car / Hotel discounts
Free gifts when sign up for specialty courses
EXCLUSIVE member only access to PADS events

Love to hear your thoughts,

S. Nagel

I havent gotten that mail yet I think? Are they holding out on me??

(No, not a member and doubt id bother to become one)

I think you summed it up. You get to decide if there is enough value there for the $29.

It's pretty much a fancy name for a magazine subscription, if you want the magazine it's fine. Maybe you will find and be able to get some discount or something that you wouldn't have otherwise, but good chance not (a lot of the same deals will be available otherwise.) The bags are light nylon bags like I've seen free with other subscriptions, personally I'm drowning in free bags of various sorts.

As many others have stated it basically comes down to a subscription to Sport Diver magazine. I had a subscription for two years and have intentionally let it lapse.

I felt that most of the magazine articles were big ads for PADI resorts (all of which were "5 star Gold Palm resorts").

I find Dive Training (which I get free from my LDS) to be the best magazine followed by Scuba Diving magazine which is a paid subscription. I have been a subscriber to Scuba Diving magazine since 2004.

it is probably worth it to check the hotel, rental car, dive gear and resort discounts offered through the membership, but honestly I always forget to do it...

Other than that it's a magazine subscription. I enjoy the magazine and I personally chose to keep it coming.

My 2 cents...

I enjoy the magazine. There seems to always be something of value or interest in each issue. I've paid for my membership cost thru savings from the magazine or the special offers.

It's not a rip-off. Try it for a year, take the free bag, and see what you think. Re-evaluate next year.

I actually like Sport Diver more than I do Scuba Diving.

I just got my notice in the mail the other day that it was time to renew my membership and they didn't offer me the $19.00 deal. They wanted $29.00 again this year.
