Packing a suitcase gear list

I pack the same scuba gear in my suitcases for every trip. I pack it in the same places, in the same order. I never forget anything. After all the scuba gear is packed, I pack other things, clothes, food, etc. I nearly always have a 70 lb limit, it is very easy.

What luggage are you all using to check this in? I carry my DC and reg set on my carry on but need a good check in sized luggage for all my other gear. I don't mind spending money for something that will stand to the airline beating.

Backplate and regs in the rolling carryon.
Computers and lights (or anything else with a battery) go in the backpack with the laptop.
Wings, fins, cutting devices, stage rigging, wetsuit, spools, masks, clothing go in the lightest suitcase I can find. 23kg 50lbs is the limit.
I chose fins solely based on their ability to fit in my carryon, for when the suitcase is overweight.

Why carryon a backplate; it is not fragile. Same for a reg.

You may want to rethink your strategy for a lot of overseas carriers....like with a 7kg or 10kg carry-on limit.

This limit is coming to the US.
Do you get a second checked bag?
Do you swap the steel backplate for Aluminum?
Some airlines have free bags for certain people? Or 70lbs instead of 50lbs?
Putting regulators in a hard case inside the checked bag worked, but the weight of 5 regulators was terrible when the airlines moved from 2 bags as the norm to one and now we pay per bag.

Considering the cost of Helium for open water dives (and CCR in general), the additional bag cost barely moves the needle for a week of tech diving. When the gas bills alone are $1500 for the week, a $100 bag fee is an incidental cost. It just feels morally wrong to pay the airlines anything when the treatment is so bad. It feels like an obligation to screw them as much as possible.

If you cram all your gear for a tech diving trip in one checked bag and a carry-on, I think you're in the minority. Yes, the extra $100 or $150 for a trip or two each year is almost an insignificant part of the total cost of being in this niche hobby.

I stand on principal, and „smuggle“ my regs in the carryon (as I don’t get weight checked on them) and leave space in the checked bag for other heavy and big stuff
Last trip my carry on had 15kgs of brass

So far I have been able to get everything I need for a week cave diving trip in one checked bag and my carry on. Just barely at the 50 lb weight limit, usually. I usually go to the same shop so most of the time I’ve been able to leave some things there. This upcoming trip will really test me, though, I have to bring 4 regulators and all my hardware, in addition to the normal SM harness/wetsuit/masks/lights/boots.

Usually I check regulators; mine are not that fragile and I kind of wrap the stages in socks or T shirts to pad them. I might need to carry on some of them this trip to avoid the weight restriction. So far I haven’t encountered weight issues in my carry on.

Wtf are we just streaming consciousness in posts now? I don’t understand what this post is about. Maybe if you said where you were going, what dives you were doing, what size bag limits you have, etc etc we’d have a thread and something to comment on.
