ptown?

anyone know about when the bugs hit the ptown area?
Im looking to get a few big ones
thanks

I've never been diving in Provincetown. Knowing lobsters they'll be anywhere they don't need to work hard for a meal and in currents is one of those places. I've never found more lobsters at one time of the year than another although when they are molting they tend to hide that's usually around the Fall. I'd advise to dive the slack time between the tide changes and try to make your ingress and egress such that the current when the tide does change works for you not against you. You also may notice some strange tidal actions such as current running in the opposite direction as the tide change. This can be due to the bottom, breakwaters and/or the natural shape of the shoreline. Sometimes once you figure an area out by repeated dives you can get these quirks working for you and extend your dive time beyond the slack. Big lobsters have gotten rare close to shore. There was a time when finding 3 lbs bugs was just another dive. I haven't gone for bugs in a longtime but the last 10 years I did I saw a noticeable decline in the number of big or even keeper size bugs. Also there are restrictions on how big a bug can be kept these days. Good luck and be careful.

If you're really interested in going for P-Town bugs, you should get with Mike Walls ASAP at Cape Cod Dive Locker who runs charters in Province town for annual lobster race point run. They do VERY WELL in Race Drift dive on bugs... http://www.capedivelocker.com/

They have about 8-9 trips planned there in the next month or so and they are ALL booked! But they can always add more.
