Hi,

I am about to do my classroom and pool work here in chilly Minneapolis but will be in San Diego in about a month and am thinking of doing my referral OW cert. there. Can anyone recommend a good dive shop/school there?

Cheers.

Ok after seeing your post in Basic Scuba, I came to look - but you just posted this yesterday. It's a weekend, I bet most of the members here are out diving or other important things. You'll get responses by Monday I am sure... ;)

:hmmm: ?

Padi, Nauii or SSI???

My local dive shop where I will take the classroom and pool sessions is PADI, so that is what I am looking for for the OW work.

Thanks.

Geeezzz what a shame PADI has such a low profile here in SoCal .....might be tuff finding a PADI Instructor within say ...ten feet of any GPS co-ordinate here in SD. The only business with a bigger footprint in SD than PADI Dive Shops are ...Roberto's Taco Shop and possibly Chueys auto body ....easy with the flying vegatables

Hi there,

Should be no problem getting a PADI shop to do your open water dives with here in San Diego. It's been a while since I was certified, so I can't vouch for how great or so-so these shops are now, but the following shops are still holding lots of classes, have a large volume of students, and are used to doing referrals.

Although they all have websites and e-mail addresses, it is generally better to call them and ask to talk to the head instructor. He /She can place you with the person they think is the most appropriate and who's schedule most closely fits yours.

I hope this helps, good luck and welcome to diving!

Just a comment ... if you do decide to go with Ocean Enterprises, ask if you can get into one of Ian's classes ... you will not be disappointed :D

San Diego may have warm weather but the water is quite cold 50's in the winter, 60's in the summer. Take it from me, I used to live there and worked at two of the shops mentioned in post above. At Aqua Tech you can rent a DUI drysuit to use durring your open water course for only $25.
