I suppose that's the analogy you use when you really don't know what to say. :shakehead:

I'll keep my 23 year old US Diver (Aqualung) regs. They work perfectly.

Now I know why I have several regs....now I gotta figure out which is blond and which is red head. :)

Really I call BS on the entire thing, there is little real difference between the ALs and Apeks...or any of the other major brands for that matter.

I use both Apeks Black Pearl and an Aqualung Legend Lux. Both are excellent regs and hard to tell a difference in breathing. I will say that Apeks makes very sexy regs. Take the time to look at the Black Pearl, Tungsten, XTX 200 models.

Funny!!! Aqua Lung basically bought the right to Apeks design and all their regs since then have been near identical. They pimp little things like a reg with a piece of plastic to keep your lips warm and tuned down to prevent freezing (for $100 more....). If sexy = paying $100 for a piece of plastic then go for it. I'll stick with my unsexy and easily self serviced Dive Rite regs.

You lose me right way when someone starts talking about "brands" instead of engineering.

That said... the analogy is correct in one way. If it Flies, Floats or F... it's cheaper to rent it. Probably wise for this OW student until he is sure he'll actually be an active diver. Otherwise there will be another slightly used reg on eBay at discounted prices.

There is a lot more than just plastic and lip warmer between Apeks regs and Aqualung regs. The guts of the Aqualung regs were designed to use the same HP seat that is used on all their Balanced regulators. The internal configuration is different and at time the quality control is differnet because they are made in diferent places. I myself would pick a Scubapro regulator :snicker:.
