I would hope a majority of the public would be smart enough to realize our armed forces and private citizens that are fighting for our freedom are not a bunch of bafoons. I thought some of the scenarios were quite comical, because it was so obvious those scenarios would never occur.

Matt

Matt you seem like an intelligent guy. However not everyone in life is as intelligent as you and I. There are people that think all this Hollywood BS is straight up.
I remember as a 17 year old I enlisted in the NZ Army as it was something that I had aspired to do all my life.
I lost a lot of my so-called-friends because they all thought that I wanted to be a "Baby-killer" or some crap like that. I mean I was fresh out of basic training and I was a "Baby-Killer"? ***? This was stupidity at its utmost! The reality is they didnt have a clue because they took all the crap Hollywood films they had seen as gospel.
I mean have you ever tried to fire two AK's on full auto with one hand and have even one round land on the target? PAH!

If you look back at media coverage in the first few wars of last century they hardly ever focused on the negatives. Even all the "war" movies made afterward focused on the positives and reassuring the Men on the Ground and the family back home.

Look at media coverage of the war in SE Asia and they all focused on things like My Lai and William Calley. It was a small part of what happened but had a huge part of the media coverage. Why? Because it sold and it made money. So basically they wanted to screw the men on the ground to make money.
Nothing has changed. Thats why Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen get pissed off at Hollywood BS. Well I do anyway...

I was just as naive as you and thought the same way in 1968 when Hollywood and the media really turned on the military and started portraying every soldier as a bloodthirsty psychopath. Many of us laughed it off and figured the truth would get out and it was just entertainment for the masses even if it was at the expense of good men and women. We learned how wrong we were when within 4 years opinion polls showed a drastic swing with a large portion of the population convinced, courtesy of Hollywood and a few media types, that every American that came home from Vietnam was a mentally deranged individual to be scorned and to stay clear of. It took almost 8 years to begin reversing public opinion enough that a Veteran didn’t have to hide his military service on a job application because too many employers had the impression a Vietnam Vet was likely to “snap” at work and start killing people.

I’m sure you can find plenty of entertainment venues where you can laugh at cruel stereotypes of others, but I personally don’t believe US military personal are the ones we should be laughing at, and I do believe if unchecked again it will create future hardships for our troops.

Funny that you should say that, I have had to go to Kent State a couple times this past year. I too was called that, hard to have thick skin to those who are uneducated and believe what they see in movies is gospel. After awhile, I decided to begin my psyops on some of the college students that hug trees, wear peace symbols and believe in world peace(that will never occur until, we clean up the cold war era stuff that we all started). I would find the ring leader of the group and single them out, engage in some sort of small talk being friendly. Then when I felt the vic is feeling secure in talking to me, I would politely remind them about what they said to me the other day trying to embarass me in the crowd. Then I would say in a soft tone and looking them in the eye, "I must have not done my job correctly, your still alive". All kidding aside this does change ones view on life, they begin to think more clearly as I educate them in the events in the world. I tell them that if it was not for what we do on a daily basis ie.. protecting democracy and people like them, do you not think that the terrorist or anybody who wants to do harmful things in the U.S. or elsewhere would not think about coming here and doing what they like doing to the masses?

Explaining things about what happens in other countries when you speak out against the government can lead to loosing one's head, brother, sister, child or, entire family ect... Freedom of speech is not something that is really supported in some countries and has dire concequences, if one chooses to speak out. Living conditions are worse than the what the homeless have here. Living like a serf in the fuedal times is what I have witnessed in some countries I have visited (yeah the cast system is still around). Pictures say a thousand words so, I show them proof that all is not greener on the other side if we quit doing what we are willing to do for this country.

The other thing that really get's to me is when they say "we" showed them. Now come on, were you there, did you do anything but sit at home and watch T.V.? If you were at home living comfortably in A.C., watchin T.V., snuggling on the couch...then please say "you" or the "our military" did that. Unless your willing to serve and put your hat in the ring, just support us. Those that have served have that honor of saying "we", all others must do their time to get that privilige.

Azza, corporals are a part of a time honored corps known as the "backbone of the Army", they are considered NCO's as well and get the same respect as any NCO I have ever known.

YIKES!

I didn't realize my question would spark so much debate...however, after seeing it last night, I was not impressed with its accuracy! It was decent, but I believe the director wanted to be accurate...if thats not the case, then call me ignorant, but if its meant to be accurate, it should be accurate.

As for Kent State, ect, I have found many colleges with the predominant liberal group to be the most vocal, but the college republicans get many things done without as much fuss!

I would like to think that the producer, Steven Bochco, would like to be accurate and just present a story, but there’s just too much evidence that is not the case. First is the fact that he doth protest too much about his goal of, “I don't want to politicize the show in any way” that he has spouted too often since the series was announced. Then we have the fact that Bochco spent at least $30K we know of to defeat President Bush last year and possibly spent closer to $100K in shadow anti war groups and his support of Wesley Clark (many of the same groups as Alan Alda). Democrats.Com (the aggressive progressives) love the show though they think it could go further in showing how ugly war is and Dennis Kucinich’s former press secretary states, “the only positive thing I could say was that it began to show war in a way that included injuries and deaths.” One of the most liberal anti-war websites, Daily Kos, covered the show with comments like, “100% accuracy is not the goal. Recreating the general dynamic and making sure the viewers understand that the Iraq war is a BIG DEAL is the goal. If this raises the perception of the cost of this adventure, I'll be happy.”

Wow...Thank you freedom of information b/c I had no idea about the political monetary support he gave... War is ugly, but there are many beautiful things that can happen in the midst of it, or after...

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. - John Stuart Mill

I just saw the newest episode of "Over There" last night...Is that really what its like? I've heard yall say that its not realistic, but what is? The whole episode kept me upright in bed!

Nope not me, I'd rather watch CSI or something along the lines. Did watch "Alexander" though great flick.
