Where and when do we do it and to who?

You know, by todays standards, we should have not survived our first dives let alone this long.

Gary D.

Who says you did? Maybe we all died and came here to scubaboard -- sorta like the twilight zone

scubapro50:
I have been diving for over 35 years now. A lot of changes have taken place most for the better of the sport. Scuba companies have come and gone (Sportways, White Stag, Nemrod, Healthways, Voit) and now many of our old stanbys (USD, DACOR) have stated they are no longer makeing parts for their older units. Recently I was question why I didn't have an oct. on by rig ..... later a fellow diver told me he just completed a course and he wasn't shown how to buddy breath with just one 2nd stage because everyone was now required to have a oct. on their regulator (?).
Scubapro50,
I'm not trying to give you a hard time here, but you kind of sound like someone who was diving 35 years ago, went into a sleep chamber and just woke up. I mean, these changes didn't just suddenly happen. Unless you've been solo diving in some obscure location, you've known that everyone now uses an octo, that no one buddy breathes anymore. You said:

God help the divemaster if I ever show up with my Dacor double hose, J valve tank and co2 vest ..... he would have a heart attack.
Have you not made a boat dive in 30 years? Lots of people dive vintage gear, and know full well to call ahead.
I learned to dive in '71 (1st breath on a Voit dbl hose) and there were no computers or octos, and BCs were all the new rage. I like it that I was trained the old way, have upgraded my skills (and gear) and have the best of both worlds.
But alas, I too sometimes pine for the good 'o days...

I just sold my 74 VW Bug ... it only had 500,000 miles on it . Yes, I do still have that equipment . With the exception of the J valve I have used both my doublehose and co2 vest in the pool to show the "newbies" what it was like at the begining. They really like the bubbles comming up from behind them. You know what really did in the double hose was the lack oh HP and LP ports. If a scuba company would redesign the double hose so you could hook up an air gague, oct, and inflator hose I would buy it .... Dan

Didn't I run into you on the wing of that airliner? You remember, that stormy cold night when we scared the crap out of that guy in A-12. I'm sure we met somewhere.

ps: I still have and use regs I worked everyday with back in the mid 60's.

The same dive operator (Don Foster in Grand Cayman) ... well one of his divemasters gave me the "need to get new equipment" talk and stress the need to use octs. for safety. The very next day (using Don Foster again) my wife notice our scuba guide on the 100ft tunnel/wall dive at northwest point wasn't wearing an oct. ..... I kept my mouth shut ... I HAVE MADE OVER 500 DIVES .... I currently own a Scubapro MK10 and a Dacor Pacer 900 ............. both are now "vintage" but work great due to good up keep.

By today's standards, none but the most recent generation should have survived to adulthood.

Scenario: You are a toy designer. Today's assignment - get the legal department to approve your proposal to start manufacturing and selling lawn darts again. Good luck.
