and it looks like they have the same conditions for every dive...including beach dives....so who knows....it could have been a little jab at BP and not really an accurate reporting of conditions.

Alohagal took that picture at Down Under's dive shop Monday when we were in Gulf Shores. We talked with Beth at Down Under. The pass at Perdido in Orange Beach is closed to all but oil cleanup vessels. She said that the pass in Panama City is being dammed up as well but they are still running dive charters so far. The oil is hit and miss on the surface and widespread beneath the surface due to the dispersant being used.

She said she thought Dive Locker in PC was still running trips. I recommend calling your Dive op as close as possible to the time of the dive. We've done technical charters to the Oriskany with Beth and I trust her judgment. Her statement was " I'm not diving my gear down thru a layer of that gunk".

Nope....not a jab. That is a very accurate report of the conditions we encountered in Gulf Shores/Orange Beach last week.

Please post links to the videos showing "foot deep oil" over the "O". My last trip out was the 16th and there was no discernable oil in the surface. If it's there, show the evidence. "Foot Deep Oil" is HUGE. That's bigger than anything we've seen so far. Show it !

Thanks Capt. Jim, for some on-the-seas perspective!

The rumors and speculation posted here and other places are just that......BS. Those that have been there have not seen these issues. The people who post such ridiculous stuff as foot deep oil must be BP employees who are trying to keep boat traffic out of MY Gulf of Mexico! With that being said the oil is a moving mass, what is in one spot one hour may be a mile away in just a few hours. Your best option is to talk to people who have been going out like Dr. Dive!

If you listen to rumours I just dove in Oil off the Keys reefs, instead of blue water and 80foot viz.

I've been trying to follow this from afar as I do enjoy diving in the Gulf. Though I have read that a number of sites are still open, I have also recently read that about 400 people claimed they felt sick after visiting Pensacola Beach and swimming in the Gulf.

Appreciate any first hand reports from locals along the Gulf that can let others better understand the current conditions and situations.
