I tend to use Castrol Syntec on mine, so my service interval is definitely greater than 5K dives!

If you know your gear well enough, you should be able to tell when it's not up to par, and get it serviced right away. Some regs may be good for a few years, with the occasional grease packing by your service professional, and others may need annuals, or semi-annuals. If you use an Air2, then you'll want to service your BC much more often than a traditional-inflator BC. Just take good care of your gear, rinse well, and don't leave it in musty humid areas and it should be fine!
