Cute story but I think you are leaving out some essentials. Did you show him ANY form of ID? Did you have ANY conversaton where you mentioned where you were staying ,your name and that you owned a condo on Bonaire? Did he see your car and get the license plate number? Keep in mind how small that island is and how difficult it would be for you to get off that island without paying him?:eyebrow: Just smart business.
and I suppose he could of had him followed too ?

:whatever:

It's nice, and kinda humbling, to have trust given to you by only your word

Used to happen here in the States when I was young and growing up in a small community. Actually with some people it still happens here on Catalina. I've been extended credit a number of times and paid later, but here they know I'm not going anywhere... except 60 feet under. Of course to those on the island I'm not a stranger, just strange.

Yes it is. It happens alot here in the South. Not too long ago I managed to get to the airport with no wallet. You can actually fly without an ID although trust me you don't want to. So I get to my gate and am on the phone trying to reach a colleague in Boston as I have no idea how I am going to get from the airport to the hotel. A stranger hands me 100 dollars and his business card.

I think I'd like Bonaire culture.

You would, the People are great, i have gone 3 times there , and plan on going back 33times!!:D

Went in to a local place on island yesterday to buy some outdoor teak furniture. Picked out some nice teak recliners. After the owner helped me put into the car, I went inside to pay using a local debit card. Well the place did not have electricity so my card was useless. I told him I could write a check on a local bank but I certainly didn't have my checkbook on me.

Now here's the amazing part. I had over $500 of merchandise in my car, the owner did not know me nor did he ask for identification. He simply said, well take the furniture and come back tomorrow and give me a check.

Now I ask a simple question..Where or where in the US can an unidentified person walk in, remove over $500 in merchandise and simply walk away on the word of an unidentified stranger???

Well Vince you have to remember that you and your lovely wife are residents sometimes. Besides you own a beautiful Condo so he knows you are not going to ruin your reputation over a petty $500. beans:no:

Well everyone can have their own take on this interesting story. But for me it speaks for itself.
OK time to get back and enjoy the view and another scotch on the rocks!
Dinner tonight was the take out chicken from Carnerceria Latino; best grilled chicken on the island! Of course my wife's sauteed mushrooms; green beans & rice smell real good right now. Life is great here on Bonaire (plus the diving ain't too shabby). :D

Hey..PF.. Willing to betcha you'd just love it here!!

Man Vince....Don't go letting him start a rant here on this heartwarming story...
Pilot...let it go......

Your dinner menu was captivating, DV, but maybe you'd like to answer these questions? Did you show him ANY form of ID? Did you have ANY conversaton where you mentioned where you were staying ,your name and that you owned a condo on Bonaire? Did he see your car and get the license plate number? Keep in mind how small that island is and how difficult it would be for you to get off that island without paying him? Just smart business.

Gee whiz do we really have to pick apart the OP's original story and understand every last fact? Maybe the OP's title "Only on Bonaire" is a little exagerrated, things like that happen in other countries even including parts of the US. But they happen all to infrequently almost everywhere and let's just enjoy those moments when they do. I guess many of us have become so cynical that we don't even accept some goodwill and honorable business practices at face value but insist it still must be plot towards manipulative marketing practices with the store owner knowing that he was somehow still covered.

I think what you aren't aware of is when a poster has a dog in the fight or in other words has alterier motivations beyond what they appear, that there is more going on then meets the eye with the original post AND the replies to it.

Of course they do. But as stated already... dog in fight... alterior motives...

Kind of like a dive operator posting good reviews of his establishment on the internet. :eyebrow:

Not really, manipulation yes, but nothing to do with the store owner, as already stated.

If you don't drink the Bonaire Cool Aid you can see glimps little piece of the truth though the mist.
