I knew it was only a matter of time before the LDS's found a new cash cow. A recent newsletter from the LDS is advertising helitrox. Hey guys, lets mix in a little helium to nitrox come up with a certification course and wala instant cash. Naturally you have to have a nitrox cert as a prerequisite, can't just take the helitrox course LDS would lose money. I wonder what that fill will cost and special goody equiptment will be required also. I can see it now, the users will be saying it makes them like think an Einstien at 60 feet without all that nitrogen clouding your mind.

Helitrox??? I thought it was called Trimix..... oh well.

lol, my thought exactly.

Giving it another name makes it sound so much less technical. Since its not technical, it must be safe, so we can offer trimix to the masses.

I thought it was funny when my non-diving friends might mentally substitute the word "nitrous" when I mention "nitrox". Visions of laughing gas or very fast race cars are inevitable.

I'll see what misinterpretations come from "helitrox". Laughing gas lite?

Sounds like a helicopter style microlite to me.......

Exactly, it isn't being promoted as deep specialty mix but as something for the average 60 foot reef dweller.

Actually putting some helium into the mix is a good idea. And you should have some additional training anytime you are diving with something new. As far as a "cash cow" for the LDS is the dive shop there for your convenience or for the owner to enjoy a living doing something they enjoy? Some of us dive a mix with helium at depths that aren't "that" deep. Helium dilutes(replaces) Nitrogen and though it is usually used for deep mixes it works well for shallower mixes also.

OK, sorry to insinuate that diving with helium is humorous. I didn't mean that at all. I was chuckling at the name "heliotrox" -- I thought that that was an older historical name for trimix. Is there a difference between heliotrox and trimix?

I thought Helium off gasses faster and that you needed to slow your ascent rate down even more to control a helium hit. I might be wrong. For that reason I thought is what not considered safe for shallow dives only deeper where the release of pressure was not as great as you ascended.
