We did not found the time yet to make a web site for Rao. There are some pictures and general information at the Weda Resort Facebook page. Indeed, although both places are at Halmahera, the diving seasons are opposite (or complementary, as I prefer).
If you send us a mail we will send you a small info-sheet.
From the sheet:
Magic Bay at the Island Rao, North Halmahera, East Indonesia, is a paradise for lovers of the perfect beach, a clean and crystal clear ocean, magical and unspoiled nature, and ultimate privacy. Honeymooners, a family or a small group of friends are very welcome to stay in our private beach villa. Here you can reconnect to yourself, family or friends and nature by disconnecting, since there is no telephone and internet connection yet.
Our eight meter long fiber-glass speedboat was specially designed for divers. It is equipped with 2 x 70 horse power four stroke engines. The passengers are excellent protected against sun, rain and wind. To make it even more comfortable there is a toilet aboard. With our “private boat” concept, you can make your own daily schedule.
The villa is still under construction, untill it is finshed we rent out our own 2 room house. This house is not 90 meters from the beach.

Wingy, where exactly did you dive around Halmahera? It is a rather big island with 1200 kilometers coastline (not including yet the hundreds of smaller islands and the bigger islands, such as Morotai and Bacan). For sure I do not reconize Weda Bay nor Rao in your description. Further,
what area do you mean with West of Tobelo? Tobelo, where I lived and dived some years, is at the East coast of North Halmahera. West of Tobelo are volcanoes.
But now a far more important question. Where did you see Wobbegongs. After Mark Erdmann scientifically descriped the Halmahera Walking shark, the big question was: are there also Wobbegongs around Halmahera? If yes, then they probably are an endemic species.
Would be great if you have a picture of the Wobbegong or if you still recall where you spotted it. Thank you for sharing.

Dive Morotai | Dive Halmahera | Dive Ternate | Dive Raja Ampat | Long Tales, Tall Shadows - and sorry my mistake heading east towards Sorong. How embarassing..i have a degree in Geography lol. Disrupted sorry!

When I find my Ipad charger where I logged all the dives by date I will post more about what we found where. Ditto the wobbegong pics..they may have been at R4 but I cannot post them until the photographer who owns them gives me permission. I can link you to his page Search Results for "Halmahera Sea" | Photography by TIM ROCK

Thank you Wingy. It would be great if you could check your logbook for the spot of the Wobbegong. If it is a Wobbegong from Raja Ampat, we do not really need the photo. But ifyou saw it near Halmahera, it would be very exciting news. I visited the links you gave (thank you), and I saw that indeed you did not visit Weda Bay nor Rao. Well, I hope we may show you some of the excellent parts of East Indoneisa some day and change your opinion about halmahera. In general it is a pity if live aboards visit an area without really trying to get all information they can lay there hands on. We are always very willing to give information we have. But we are seldom asked for.

Indah, please dont get me wrong I did enjoy Halmahera - we were doing exploratory diving so we were prepared for hit and miss. The Tambora people went to every effort to have a local from Hamlahera with us because of the exploratory nature. I guess the other side of the equation is if every lob only ever did known sites new ones would never get included in future itineries so I was not at all disappointed, just felt that in comparison to R4 sites the biomass of diverse species where we looked was a little less eye popping. We had a Tobelo local with us for the trip who did show us some really great spots - one in particular I will be coming back to do again - I could dive that particular spot every day and be a happy gal.

The macro around Jailolo and Gebe really did impress me - I found one of my wishlist species at Gebe. So not disappointed in Halmahera at all, I dont think anyone in their right mind would say its bad diving just my opinion on where we dived, again, being an exploratory trip we were happy to encounter anything. Galela also gave me another wishlist item id been looking for for a decade.

Ahh! Finally got Ipad charged - my apologies was a Hamlahera walking shark at North Loloda Sedang Point - I think you would have spotted the wobbegongs in Tim's photos. Now my memory is coming back I believe the big white wobbegong was at Mayhem.

I am heading back to your neck of the woods in a couple of months - and I would never say no to another exploratory trip anywhere because while some spots were misses some were absolute heaven. So no complaints at all nothing but praise for the Tambora people for doing an exploratory trip and going to the trouble of finding locals to join us as guides.
