Since it has been called for by SB Staff... I will elaborate - a little.

In my local area there are a number of "recreational" divers who have started doing "tech" diving without any furtherance of training. The wake up call was to them... not to well trained and experienced technical divers.

What bothers me is that shops are selling and in some cases pushing "tech" gear and diving without being set up to train people in it. I've been in shops where the owner was talking tech diving to a guy who just finished his OW that wanted to go see a wreck 200 feet down. That guy needs a wake up call and so does the shop owner... What say you techies... am I right or wrong?

why not just say that?
save a lot of confusion.....
thread would probally went a different direction..
but from your statements. you seem to have a issue with tech guys

I highly agree with you Ghost. But not all LDS do that as a standard practice. It is a good way to get in trouble!

Happy Diving!

I think I get your drift Ghost, I sincerely hope that LDS was lining that diver up for Wreck and Tech courses. I am qualified for neither but would bloody well be certed in both AND Deep Diver AND have some more dives beyond that just to prep me for that dive. You are concerned for the safety of that diver and other divers like him. That's cool.
IMHO, I don't think anyone should dive anything they're not properly Trained and certed for, ever. I don't care how experienced my dive buddies are... If I'm not certed to penetrate a wreck ( even if it's in 50' , beautiful viz.,in a familiar site.), I'm not going in! I hope that new diver feels the same.
Can I get an AMEN?!

You are right about the training thing. I'm all for that. However, on the OW vs. Techie thing, I think if you go back and take an honest look at your original post, you'll see that it sure sounds like you are saying techies are a bunch of idiots risking their lives for nothing. I can see how that would upset some people (myself included). I'm a GUE guy myself and I'll be the first to admit there are some over inflated egos out there (GUE seems to have its fair share! :D ), but most of them are good people willing to help anybody they can. Thanks for clarifying your post. Sorry about the misunderstanding.

Newbies get bashed as an extension of bashing instructors and agencies because they are the end result of the poor training and lax standards. Not so much any individual newbie, but newbies as a generic group because they didn't have to swim the Mississippi or walk 5 miles in the snow (barefoot) to pick up their c-cards.

A bit tongue-in-cheek here... :)

No. The instructors and agencies get bashed out of concern for the new divers who are at their mercy. It's not lax standards but illogical ones that teach little or nothing of value. It has nothing to with having to swim the Mississippi or walk anywhere. It has to do with no being taught some important skills at all and being taught other skills poorly.

Just reminded me of a picture I saw of tech divers on the manta industries www site doing deco after a 600 foot dive. Now THAT'S a lot of tanks.... The guy with the RB looks like he's got multiple scrubbers and tanks hooked up.. waaaay to complicated for me.

I'm newly "tech" certified, but do I think for a second that I'm ready for this kinda stuff? No friggen way...

I wanna take my sweet ***** time, learn from people I respect, work on my skills, and MAYBE after 3-4 years of very hard work and dedication, I could try something like this.

Once.

Ghostdiver,

Are you saying that this LDS owner is advocating a 200 foot dive on air to an OW diver?

I may have been willing to clarify what I was saying but the bashing (from Tech Divers) started before I was even asked.

This is my candidate for troll of the week.

D,
Just because you are Tec certified does not mean that your next dive is going to be 600fsw!. As a Tec Diver you should know you have to build yourself for that. I have done plenty of dives OC and CCR from 150 to 260 fsw and dind not have to carry that much stuff. 600 fsw is some serious business and that is why you have to cary all that stuff. Only you can think for yourself, only you can breath for yourself and only you can save yourself. BTW I am pretty shure they did not showed all the safety divers they also had for that dive! Do not let youself get scared. Yes it is complicated and yes you have to carry lost of stuff ( you life depends on it). Get proper trainig and you will be OK.
