We saw your guide and the divers he was leading in to the cave with what lookes like silt clouds bellowing up around them in the slide show. We may know more than you think.

I never said Horge was my guide. I know him and he's an excellent diver. You should try and dive with him sometime.

Scary stuff here for sure. With all of the talk about 1000's of divers doing this all of the time without dying I wonder how many of these 1000's of people had the ***** scared out of them on one of these dives. I would imagine some prayers and promises have been made by more than a few divers there (and not just in the room with the cross and the squealing ladies)

This is a recreational dive! This is a pointless argument because it's impossible to discuss the potential problems associated with this dive with anyone who is not familiar with it.

Of course it's recreational and it is a pointless arguement because you've already decided that somehow this overheasd environment is different than all others. I thin it's a self defence thing thoug and you should worry more about defending your life than past actions.
If you all want to make this into a technical dive in your minds, then go right ahead. Lay in a big supply of antacids and moan and groan about how other people dive...

You don't get it. Technical, recreational no matter. there is a cieling and minor restrictions. The guide sees fit to wear some sort of cave gear but none of the divers do. Why? Maybe he doesn't see it as so "recreational"?

I don't really need antacids and I'm used to seeing divers carried away. all were easy recreational dives BTW. A couple more won't make much differnce to me as long as they aren't family or close friends. I still have to try though and I did so...good diving to you.

Deep diving, in any context, is problematic, even more so in cave/wreck/overhead - we all know why. S#!t happens because of depth in so many ways. To me a deep dive is any dive over 80' where narcosis can happen more often than at lesser depth. Why push it? Devil's Throat dove in the matter described is pushing it. I can think of other dive plans that would make that dive safer.

And, as far my Exley reference, diving deep kills (ending in drowning) the best divers more often than any other contributing factor; although, rebreather fatalities among seasoned divers is gaining.

Just a quick search for "devils throat" gave me THIShttp://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=48397&highlight=devils+throat thread. I'm sure there's more:

We'd heard the Devil's Throat was very cool and talked to the operators about that. They said there was a group of 4 who also wanted to go, but since it's 130' and a swim-through they wanted to take us all for a deep check-out dive first, which we all went off to do on Columbia Wall with a different DM, who I'll call Gabriel to not protect the guilty.

Gabriel preps us by saying we'll go to 130' max, come up when you have 700 lbs or all together after 20 mins. Everyone in the group is diving on a computer. Since the PADI charts say 10 mins at 130' I'm trusting two things 1) that the computer will say when we need to come up 2) that my buddy's going to run out of air before then anyway.

Gabriel tells us to meet him at 130' and goes in. We all follow and my buddy and I are going down maybe 10-15' away from each other. I'm looking at my gauge and see that the DM has passed 130' and I'm already at 135' myself. My buddy is following the DM and not looking at me, so I started wailing away on my tank to get his attention. Gabriel looks up, but my buddy doesn't. I've slowed my descent, but that means he's going away from me even faster.

So I'm thinking, he's not only my buddy but my good friend, and I talked him into all of this. I'm also the more experienced diver, so this is all my responsibility. So I keep going down to get him. I get to 159' and finally get his attention. He's at 162'. I give the emphatic motions for 1 3 0 and point up. He says OK, and we start going up slowly.

BTW, the others in the group have done a variety of things. One couple is up higher, looks like 130-135'. The other buddy team is not together - one's maybe at 145', the other is down with my buddy and the DM.

A few seconds later I turn around to check on my buddy and find that he's not coming up with me. He has gone back down with the DM. OMG, what's he doing?? I'm thinking he must be narked, since he obviously understood what I was saying about 130'.

So again I go off on the tank banger, and again Gabriel notices. He finally points that out to my buddy, who then finally looks at his gauges, shows them to the DM and starts coming up. He lets me know he's low on air, so it's time to go up. Good!

We go up and are having to swim hard to get over the edge of the wall due to the current. He's holding my hand at this point, making it harder to swim, but then he shows my why. At 80' he's got about 50 lbs of air. I have 1500, so we're OK there. I make him run out competely, we share my air, then we start start the slowest ascent I've ever made, since I don't know what you're supposed to do after 160'/170'!

In all fairness the camera could have just caught him in an awkward moment.

On my last dive to 400 feet something dawned on me...

Why was I there?

After giving it careful consideration I realized I was crazy.

Then I woke up... from my dream.

Some guys to need wake up in reality : )
Thirteen pages of grouchy off one troll.

Niiiiiiiiice!

Ghostdiver is not quite in the same league as Lawman, as trolls go, but he definitely is in the running for the troll-of-the-month award.

Way to go Ghost!

Not all trolls are a waste. This thread, at the least, concerns recreational limits - a subject as important as any other.
