Personally, I like to use a short (capped) pole spear for a tickle stick. That way, if I can't find any keepers, I can at least usually nab a flounder or two.

As Soggy will tell you though, flounder are good at blending in with the sand, and it might take some folks a bit of practice to notice them at a glance.

Also, if you use a spear, please bear in mind that spearing lobster is illegal and irresponsible, and only use it for tickling with the cap on. You don't want to skewer one and find out after the fact that it's short, or worse yet a berried (egg-bearing) female.

Matt,

I like this idea so much that I bought one .
Question: How do you keep the cap on? I figured it could easily get snagged and pop off when retrieving the spear from a hole.

You figure correctly. The cap on Matt's spear now resembles a piece of duct tape. An angry lobster ate the last one.

After a few dives for lobstahs, I have the following observations:

1. Home Depot sells the aluminum rods, 1/4" or 3/8" in 3 foot lengths. I bot one, bent the end and then put some cord with duct tape on the handle end and it works awesome. cost a few dollars. I even put a detachable wrist loop on it, but usually just swim with it in my hands.

2. Lobstah guage on a zinger makes it pretty easy to quickly measure any lobsters without fumbling around too much. I attach mine to my right BC D ring.

3. The people who consistently catch more lobstah than others [of which I am NOT one] have no fear for sticking their hands in places that scare the #%^# out of me. I remember talking with Laura after a CAD shore dive last year going something like this:

AT: "Man! why can't I get any lobsters? I mean, yoiu always come up with a few.?!?!?!?!"

Laura: "Yeah...............yup..........you gotta get in there and get em. Know what I mean? Like last year, I broke my finger by one. but I got him."

I think you get hte picture.

4. Going to Old Garden on a SAT is not the prime place, easy to get to, thus it isn't a prime place.
