They have inspected the Dolphin's body and identified her as Olin.
Here is the link, you can ignore the Hebrew and see the photos:

http://immrac.haifa.ac.il/hebrew/news.htm

The body was found on December 9th, somewhere between Ras A Satan and Nuweiba. There is a photo of the body.

Since December 17th, The daughter have been spotted frequently- alone and Wounded- in front of the Dolphin Reef's nets.

I have just returned to Nuweiba this evening and find that my latest posting has once again disappeared, so here it is again...

I posted another reply to this thread a few days ago but it seems to have disappeared.

If my first posting has offended anybody then I apologize. That was not my intention.

However, I do get upset when unconfirmed rumours are spread on the net through forums. Such rumours can be very upsetting if proved to be true and equally upsetting ( if not more ) if not true. This is especially the case with Oleen as she is so well loved here. I myself have seen her at the Nuweiba Holiday beach on several occasions, in front of Swisscare beach, and have swam with her a couple of times at Maizena. I also supposedly know the true story of the origins of how she and her partner were injured those so many years ago, ( her partner later dieing ).

There were reports of a young British girl being killed a few months ago by a shark at the Dahab Hilton beach. No one here could get any confirmation what so ever that this ever took place. We have a pretty good network here and usually get to know what is happening, such as the Engish guest who died recently in a Nuweiba hotel, a member of staff who died in another, or about this and about that.

If Oleen were to die business here in Nuweiba would not be affected as for quite a few years now tour operators have stopped the excursions to Maizena because she was no longer always ( almost guaranteed ) to be found there. So there is no reason for such things to be kep secret.

2 -4 years ago she was a frequent visitor to the Nuweiba Holiday village, rotating between there and Maizena ( and there is a story behind that as well ) and more recently she was more frequently seen at the Nuweiba Hilton, returning only rarely to Maizena.

The photograph that Alan refers to was taken at Nuweiba Hilton on 3rd November 2004. I know who took the picture, her husband and her daughter. These British guests are actually right now on holiday once again at that same hotel. I was sitting with them last Thursday evening after they arrived. I am in Cairo right now but will be back in Nuweiba in a couple of days time, and shall be meeting up with those guests.

Note, in my posting I mentioned two young dolphins ( not babies ) - one of which is swimming next to Oleen. I have no evidence that it was Oleen but everyone at the hotel assumes it was. I don't know if she has been back since because I simply did not check with anyone at the hotel.

I have checked with friends in Nuweiba and no one seems to have heard anything about Oleen being killed or of a dead dolphin being found near Nuweiba.

So where, or who is the source of this story, where are the photos, on which beach, and exactly on which date did this supposedly happen. I checked the two links but did not see any pictures and am unable to find any pictures as I do not understand Hebrew. If anyone wants my help to investigate this I d be delighted to help - just simply email me with all details - in the meantime, I shall remember Oleen fondly in the present tense - and as all ladies that we know, we are not able to disclose her actual age !!!
************

Now back to this evening. Thanks to Alan I have received pictures from the Israeli forum of Ooleen.

I have also been able to see the picture supposedly of Ooleen on the beach. Hopefully on Saturday I shall try and find that location and ask the people at the nearby camps what they know. Although there appears to be camps on the beach in the background, the hills behind are not correct unless the picture was cropped.

Hope to have news in a couple of days. If anyone has other, better quality pictures please send them to me.

And lastly... why was my previous posting removed ?

swisssinai,

I don't believe that in this case your post was "removed" on purpose.

It appears that you are unaware of the database corruption here at ScubaBoard that happened twice in one week. We have had to go back to a backup made on Dec. 24th. So any posts, registrations, PMs, etc. that were made since then have been lost.

No one here has a problem with anyone disputing facts. The only thing that someone would take issue with is doing so in an overtly hostile manner. This board is moderated to maintain a certain level of civility.

Hope this helps answers your questions about any missing posts.

Yup, the database corruption removed my post on floating carcasses. Looks like a few other peoples' posts were lost too. Oh well.

Unfortunately I have to report that some friends and I found yesterday the site where the body was found. It was much easier to find than we anticipated. Its on the Rock Sea Camp, run by German couple Michael and Roxana ( hope I have the spelling right ), website http://www.rocksea.net. I did not see the body - this has been moved to another place inland which we hope to visit this afternoon. But the couple there did say that there was that tell-tale missing piece from the right flipper, and that, although the bedouins deny that it is the body of Ooleen ( including, it would appear, Abdullah, the young gentleman who befriended the dolphin so many years ago ) the specialists who came later made a positive identification.

May I express my apologies once again for my harsh words in my first posting - please forgive me, my only excuse is that I was upset and just did not want to believe it.

If anyone needs more information or assistance please email me.

Wishing everyone a happy, prosperous and peaceful 2005 !

Alvin

The experts from IMMRAC who inspected the body said it was in such a state when they found it, that they could not say anything about the cause of death. There where some rumors about it beeing an speargun wound, which are hard to believe- I can't imagine someone sick enough to speagun a friendly dolphin...

However, the daughter is now in Eilat, and she is quite wounded- some cuts and an ugly wound, which looks like a rather big, round hole. Can it be from a speargun?

Here are direct links to the daughter's photos from last week- text in Hebrew (but you'll be able to see the photos):

She is nowadays near the dolphin reef, probably looking for familiar company. These dolphins used to be free until last year when it was decided to close the reef's gateway to the sea. Probably Olin and her daughter were well-acquainted with them.

A correction of my earlier post. The German couple are called Michael and Ricarda ( again excuse me if its misspelt ). Their daughter is Roxana and she is the one who was the first to find the body beached at the Rock Sea camp.

A small group of us went to see the body this afternoon and have buried it. I regret to say that I have no doubt that it is Ooleen.

Just hope the daughter will get better and will come back to Nuweiba some time soon.

I don't know if 31 is old for a dolphin or not (in the wild), but there's a bottlenose dolphin in Turks & Caicos that has exhibited the same behavior of human interaction for many years name "Jojo". I first encountered him there in the late 80s and he was already quite famous. I went back to dive in 2004 and Jojo was still known to be swimming about, playing with swimmers and escorting divers. Although I didn't see him myself on this trip.

I guess dolphins sometimes choose to hang with people. Probably not a great idea for them.
