Thank you, Northernone. That thread helped tremendously. I do believe that the Air 2 is 4th gen. This confirms that. Looking forward to using it.
 
I don't know the exact age I'd guess that the 1996-97 is pretty accurate. I've never been able to figure out the dates that coincide with those changes, I just know that is what has changed. Somehow else might be able to give us the dating around those.

I've gone through a similar thing aging an old Ranger I ended up giving it to a family member and moving on to a Brigade (ranger harness with an escape bladder).

The one I moved on from had the embroidered ranger patch and the straight shoulders. Which as I understand it dates it as the second to the oldest. They had a model before that was distinctly different, it didn't have the integrated weight system or anything. But it is still going strong. They are damn near indestructible.
