Excuse my question, but I have had a hard time finding a good answer to this question in my own searches. Is this a spot that requires cave/cavern certification? Or I guess more importantly, are there dives in this are that are safe for a non cave/cavern certified diver to do?

JahJahWarrior:
Only tech diving for cave divers. Since you asked, I'm assuming you aren't a cave diver, as most cave divers have heard of Ginnie Springs before

OW divers can dive in the Ballroom to a depth of about 60 feet/20meters depending on river levels, with a minimum of two lights. They can dive at the Devils cave system but cannot have any sorts of lights on them at all there, and depths are shallower. I actually forget the depth at the ear, it might be 60 feet or more in the cavern zone, but I haven't ever looked at my depth gage there. There's not much to see there unless you are atleast cavern so you can bring a light.

You can read all about the diving there on the Ginnie Springs website or other sites, just google Ginnie Springs and lots should pop up, it's a real popular site.
In particular, there are many OW divers in this group. Alas, there is also every level up to Full Cave.

Ginnie Springs offers open water diving as well as diving that requires cavern or cave certs. The Ginnie Ballroom is considered to be an open water dive and no cert is required and depsite that point being argued here from time to time, I can't recall the last time an OW diver actually died there and thousands dive it every year. OW divers can also dive in the run from the river, past the Devils's Ear and Devil's Ear to Little Devil and can more or less poke their heads into those areas under the restriction of a "no lights" rule that is applied to non-cavern/cave certed divers. You can also do drift dives in the river and outside of times when flooding and tannic intrusion is an issue, the visibility is very good.

In general the water coming out of the system is bottled water pure with superb visibility.
A repeat.

The good news here is that the Megadive is an opportunity for OW divers to interact with Full Cave divers, who are Superior Beings but still (mostly) nice folks who will be happy to corrupt you and lead you down the Cavern/Intro/Cave path after infecting you with an interest in cave diving and thereby ensuring your every spare dime is used to support a hobby that becomes a habit that becomes a lifestyle.
