Hi all... I'm in central Ohio, and none of the LDS's I've talked to will inspect or hydro a pre 88 Luxfer AL80. I'm willing to drive a decent ways to get this tank hydro'd, I just don't know where to take it. Any-one know a shop that's not afraid to hydro these anymore? "Tanks" in advance...

Wasn't there some problem with pre-1980 aluminum tanks? Something about bad alloy?

I guess memory is the second thing to go. I don't remember what the first was.

The alloy isn't "bad" or DOT would have pulled it from service. This includes the few hundred thousand scuba cylinders, and the tens of millions of industrial gas cylinders made from the alloy. They do now require an additional non-destructive test at each hydro to cull slightly suspect cylinders from the field, which some hydro shops won't tool up to do. I believe Chris has the tooling, so he should be able to work with a hydro facility to get it done. They also should be visualed by a trained and competent inspector at least every other year. The tank monkey may be good enough for the off year.

Yep...hydro retest services AND Eddy current instrument inspection will get you the information you need, ALONG with a proper visual inspection.

I should know by the end of the week if the cylinder can be put back into service.

Fred, thanks for the plug!
