Living in columbus though the first quarry to warm up is circleville twin quarries which is only about 20 mins south of columbus it's a small quarry and it's only about 22 feet deep but it is a lot of fun to just mess around in. I wear a 7mm Farmer John and I'm still diving and plan on diving again DEC 31, but May is when most people start diving wet again down at Circleville.

I'm in columbus too, an Ohio State student I'm always looking for somenoe to dive with so if you're ever interesteds just shout

You haven't even met me, and already implying I'm not sane . . . usually it takes people knowing me a little while before they do that! Right, Ber?

lol . . . I'm trusting the judgment of the other scuaboarders on this one. Once you hear from enough people.....

Besides, wasn't Barracuda2 thinking about going wet on the New Year's dive? How can ya be sure I wasn't talking about him :D

LOL! Ken can do a wetsuit dive in January in Ohio that's so long I start getting cold in my drysuit--pretty bad when I wuss first :D

Bflem55 it all depends on how prepared you are to dive in colder water. Gilboa is about 42 degrees year round at the tubes, in the spring the whole quarry is about 42 degrees. The water warms up slowly but plenty of people dive in April and May. We have a lot of tricks for staying warm in colder water and if you keep your dives in the 20-30 minute range and have somewhere to warm up on the surface interval there's no reason you can't have a great time and do multiple dives in a wetsuit any time of the year in Ohio. If you want to go there are people here that will buddy with you.

I'll second Ber on that. And this summer, I was quite surprised when I saw the temp at the tubes above 50!

And, for the someplace warm part, she's bringing her shelter, and I'm bringing my heater. That is a big key, not freezing your tush off while on the surface.

how deep are the tubes??

The top of the tubes (several rows of stacked concrete culverts) is at 50 ft, the bottom is about 70 ft at the back.

There is a Tuesday evening dive group that starts at Circleville sometime mid-march and goes through Thanksgiving/Early December. Plenty of folks will be diving wet. We're usually in the water by 17:30 and at the local bar/grill by 20:00.

Most of the attractions at Gilboa are in 25-35 feet of water and above the thermocline. Summer temperatures get into the high 60's above that thermocline :D

If you guys go anytime before the 30th I'll join you. I'm going to be in the Middle East fro a few weeks and I hope ot get some diving in over there.

Welcome!

As for cold water diving, wet isn't too bad. Sit in the car with the heat cranked while wrestling on the suit, you'll think about jumping in before strapping on the rest of the gear. It's the surface interval that worries me.

I had 64 feet kneeling on the bottom just past the bottom right tube as you're coming down the ramp. I'll never forget because 63 feet was the planned depth for my nitrox dive, and I had to recalculate my dive plan for the second dive.
