Odd characters

Hi there,

I've noticed this myself over the past few days (couple?). As others have said it has usually been something with an apostrophe. I have noticed it on Firefox at home and also on my iPhone using Scubaboard Mobile Layout.

To all whom have made suggestions... Thank you... However...

As several have stated... It is caused by the person who posts the post. They are the ones that are making it happen... Because their systems are using a different charset than UTF-8.

Why is this just happening now? It could be- possibly - the users whom are posting have recently updated their systems? Windows Vista, New Firefox, Chrome, or any number of possibilities??

There are no settings on YOUR (whoever you are reading this) computer that will make it look right. It's THEIR (whoever is posting it) computers making the characters appear strangely. The only helpful information at this point as to troubleshoot this situation is for someone who has made a post with the "ODD CHARACTERS" to let us know IF THEY see them as ODD characters, or if they see them as they typed them in...

Either way... There is nothing at this point that WE can do to change this (afaik - right now), except manually convert each and every instance of these differently coded "charset"-ed characters.

It happened to me when I initiated a thread about a week ago. As with this current post, I typed the message in Word, then copied and pasted. I said things like it’s and that’s. After I noticed the weird characters in the thread, I edited them to it is and that is.

For this post, I’ll only edit to state whether I see the weird characters or not.

Note - it looks good after I pasted this into Quick Reply.

It just happened to me again. This time in a PM. I composed in Word then copied into the PM.

Jim’s became JimÃÔ
“1959 became ?959

So it's the worst kind of symptom - intermittent.
(It will be interesting to see how this post appears. I composed it in Word.)

I've been doing it that way for the entire time I've been on Scubaboard. So the mysteries to me are why it only started recently and why it's intermittent.

The fact remains that it was once good. So the change is in Scubaboard, not in my PC.

You might be on to something. I have used the same method of posting and only recently see the odd chars.
