I'm down on the Oregon coast for another week and am hoping to not come home with the air in my tanks I arrived with. Unfortunately diving doesn't seem to be a thing here and so finding a site has proven difficult. Odds are if I can get in the water it will be a beach entry into surf and then go explore some rocks looking for critters.

So tell me about surf entries and exits. What works, what doesn't, and what should I look out for?
If you're solo and/or without any local knowledge you might just pick one of the (rare) baby diver sites cause there's more to the OR coast than just surf - the rips and currents can be obscene. Oregon Dive Sites

Scuba diver must be always wearing a shortie🤿
I've done that on occasion in the panhandle ("tundra") in Jan. And on rare occasions here in NOVA SCOTIA. But not always.....

I just thunk of sumthin! If you're still on the coast and there's time to arrange it, Eugene Skin Divers Supply does Oregon Coast Aquarium dives. At least they used to. With sharks and stuff. Although playing with the sturgeon is unexpectedly fun.

Sadly, our extra day got eaten up with taking my GF to the ER with kidney stones this morning, so probably won't happen this trip. That said, I learned there is a dive park in Florence with the best shore entry I have ever seen, and I am interested in diving Cape Kwinda and Cape Arago next time I am down.

Even if I am not diving, I'm going to work on surf entries just to snorkel and be in the water. Lots of beach to try diving off of!

If you are not comfortable ducking under a wave holding your breath (5 seconds maybe?) without a mask on you have no business doing surf entries/exits.

I am very uncomfortable, with your dangerous suggestions, even in what must be calmer swells
It's diving ladened with gear designed for under the surface not on it or above it it's not surfing
or swimming, and please understand that even if you are diving in relative calm, ducking under
waves to get thrown through whitewater, just being tipped over with your reg out, how quickly
being swept rolling around on the bottom unable to breath, can't find your reg, can drown you

on the calmest of calm days

You should have this discussion with yourself, before you continue to spread your poor, advice

I prefer reg out but you can go with reg in if it makes you feel better.

Maybe it's a lack of understanding, that causes a flippant disrespect for people as well as the ocean

One of these almost tipped me over one day, I'm big would have tipped most others over

I've only chosen a couple, of your funny ideas, the rest I will leave for others to think about

Sorry about your GF.
Cape Kiwanda? Let us know how that goes!
Cape Arago is my personal dive spot, so everyone else should stay away.

In over his head already breathing too hard not happy how many hands is he going to need for his mask and reg

Should have been under and diving 45 minutes ago

With what some may consider unwarranted scaremongering, which I assure you I do not do
at least open yourselves up to the possibility, and try consider those that may be left behind

When you are dead, you do not know you are dead. It is only painful for others.
The same applies when you are stupid.
